Health officials and police in Long Beach, Calif., are trying to determine how an 11-year-old girl died after getting into a fight with another girl over a boy.

Joanna Ramos, a fifth grader at Willard Elementary School, died Friday night in the hospital after complaining of a headache.

"She was so nice to me; she was like a sister to me," said classmate Stephanie Soltero, crying. "They were fighting over a boy, just for a boy. It's just stupid."

The two girls and seven onlookers went to an alley off campus after school on Friday, where they had planned to fight, according to Deputy Chief Robert Luna of the Long Beach Police Department. No weapons were used and no one was knocked to the ground.

Police are waiting for autopsy results to determine Ramos' cause of death.

Ramos' classmate said she was complaining about a pain in her head during an after-school program.

"She was crying and saying her head was hurting. She said to the supervisor, the principal on call, she told them that my head was hurting and then she called the parents and the parents took her to the hospital," classmate Justin Robert King Jr. said.

Ramos was unconscious and not breathing when family members took her to the hospital at about 5:50 p.m., according to police. She was rushed into surgery but pronounced dead three hours later.

"There are times when words do not convey a sense of sadness and loss that we feel. This was one of those times. Our hearts go out to the families affected by this tragic event yesterday. It resulted in the death of an 11-year-old girl from Long Beach. It's hard to understand how this can happen. If you're like me, you're also thinking of your own children, perhaps your daughter or your granddaughter, and you get a sense of how precious life really is," Long Beach Mayor Bob Foster said Saturday.

Outside Willard Elementary School, friends left balloons, candles, stuffed animals, flowers and letters to Ramos.

And may senseless violence rest in pieces. My heart goes out to her parents, family and friends as it's always tragic to see one so young taken by death. God speed little angel and gods blessing and healing to those left waiting for their wings to join her.

I'm not understanding the thumbs down. Do people really want a little girl's soul to be tormented? People are expressing condolences over an extremely sad story, and others disapprove. I don't get it.

So sad. One of the biggest questions is why are such young girls fighting over a boy?! Children are trying to grow up to fast. So many people are going to be traumatized by this. I feel for all of them.

what is this thing everyone is saying that they are too young to be fighting? the young ones are the ones that cant control their emotions as well and dont have as much self control. seems more normal for them to fight than adults. Part of growing up is learning other ways to solve problems, and showing the young ones they dont have to fight

11 and fighting over a boy? Wow....My heart goes out to the parents of this little girl.A needless tragedy. I had zero interest in boys at 11. Times sure are changing...innocence is being taken from our children younger and younger.

When I was 11, if I liked a boy & one of my friends liked the same one, whoever liked him more could "have" him because there were plenty of other equally good "catches." We didn't let boys come between friendships or lead to violence. This generation scares me and I'm only 25.

We can't forget about some of the other teen shows that our young girls seem to love so much and apparently attempt to emulate such as ICarly and Victorious. Young teenage girls over consumed with relationships/dating and unrealistic issues for "children" within this age group. Our children watch, believe and, imitate!

This is what happens when they see mom or dad fighting with their live-in over wanting someone else in their bed. You have it right in the homes without reality TV.

A stupid school yard fight like this goes on every day, in schools all across the country. I'm sure the girl she fought with feels terrible, too. Eleven is way too young to be fighting over boys.

Here's a life saving tip, young girls: Never, ever, sell out your dignity and self-respect for a boy! Whether you're eleven years old or 101 years old, you're better than any fight for some puppy who still laughs at fart jokes and tries to wear his pants well below his #$%$
