$206 Mega Millions Jackpot Sold In Long Island Grocery Store

What do you feel about this article?

At least one lottery player in New York is looking forward to a New Year that will be $206 million richer after one winning ticket matched all six numbers in Tuesday night's Mega Millions drawing.

The winning ticket was purchased at a King Kullen grocery store in Middle Island, Long Island, a spokesperson for the store confirmed to ABCNews.com today.

"There was a lottery representative here this morning when we opened the store," Lisa Korpi, the store's head bookkeeper, said.   "They said we had sold the winning ticket and gave us their card and said if the person came in who purchased the winning ticket to please give them that information."

"We are hearing that it was possibly sold on Monday," she said.

One day after the drawing, exactly who the winner is remains a mystery.

"We don't have any idea," Korpi said, while noting they have also not yet had any imposters looking to cash in on a fake ticket.

"Not yet," she said.  "There's just a lot of excitement and people wondering if it's their fellow neighbor."

New York Lottery officials said the $206 million jackpot makes it the largest ever for a winning ticket purchased on Long Island.

If the winner goes for the cash option, he or she could take home $151.9 million after taxes.

Korpi said the store, a Long Island-based, family run chain known as "America's First Supermarket," typically sees a big demand for tickets when the jackpot gets high, but, in this instance, that was not the case.

"We didn't have crazy lines for this one," she said.  "It was just a typical sale on a typical day."

The store's last big lottery sale was a million dollar win on a scratch-off ticket in December 2009, Korpi said.

2011 has proven to be a lucky year for lottery players in New York state.

In June, 20 co-workers at a Long Island Costco store split a $201.9 million top prize in the multi-state lottery.

The winner could take away 151 million? Try half. The guberment could take up to, and over 50 percent. Especially in NY. Unless Long Island is now a tax haven for the evil rich.

I have played every drawing for the last 2 years and have yet to even win enough to cover the cost of my ticket. Right about now if I hit enough to win $3 I would probably act like I hit the jackpot.

I used to shop in this store when I lived in the area. In case anyone was wondering,it is not a wealthy area. There was also a 3 million scratch off winner about 3 years ago in the same shopping center

You never seem to hear about anyone who did not take the 'all cash now' option.

In Ca. you stand a better chance of hitting a jackpot in a casino, than you do of winning any cash prize playing scratchers. They are horrible. My kids gave me [20] 10.00 scratchers for Christmas and I won a total of 70.00 dollars Save your money or give it to charity.Happy New Year.

The writer is a tad mistaken. $151.9M is the cash option BEFORE taxes. The winner will receive around $84M after taxes if he/she elects the cash option. (Still a nice way to start the New Year).
