'Angry Birds' Maker's 3-D Film Plans
The birds of the popular "Angry Birds" franchise are soaring to new heights, setting their sights on Hollywood.
On the game's third anniversary, Rovio Entertainment - the Finland-based media company responsible for creating the fierce digital flock - announced today that producer John Cohen will produce the "Angry Birds" movie in 3-D.
Cohen worked as a producer for "Despicable Me" in 2010. Next, he will collaborate with executive producer David Maisel of "Iron Man" on the "Angry Birds" full-length feature animation, complete with 3-D, for a summer 2016 release.
"John's an exceptionally talented producer, and we're delighted to have him join the flock," Mikael Hed, CEO of Rovio Entertainment, said in a press release.
Cohen's career also includes an executive producer credit for "Hop", the 2011 Illumination/Universal animation release about a teenage Easter bunny with dreams of becoming a rock 'n roll drummer in Hollywood.
This new project is particularly close to Cohen's own personal interest with the birds application.
"I'm so excited and honored to be working on this film with Mikael, David, and Rovio's incredibly talented game developers and artists," Cohen said via Rovio's website. "I've personally spent countless hours playing the 'Angry Birds' games over the last few years, which I can now happily justify as research for the movie."
Although this is the first flight to Hollywood for the "Angry Birds" group, their popularity has grown since their debut in 2009 to become iTunes' #1 paid app of all-time, downloaded more than 1 billion times on iPhone, Android and other digital devices including tablets.
