Girl Born In-Flight Named for Attendant
A baby girl was born on a flight from Russia to Armenia this weekend, two hours before the plane was to touch down.
The Armavia Airlines flight was en route from Siberia to Yerevan, the capital of Armenia, on Saturday when a flight attendant noticed a woman who appeared to be in labor, the Associated Press reported.
Armavia Airlines is the national air carrier of Armenia.
The mother, 31-year-old Armina Babayan, claimed to be just 6.5 months pregnant during check-in.
"All of our crew helped to deliver the baby," Asmik Gevondyan, the flight attendant who organized the delivery, told The Associated Press.
Local media reported Babayan named her daughter Asmik.
The birth of a girl in the air breaks a streak of baby boys born in flight.
In August, a woman who gave birth on an Emirates flight from Dubai to Manila named her baby after the airline. She called him EK, the airline's flight code.
In April, a baby boy was born on a Delta flight en route from Atlanta to Africa.
In 2011, a baby boy was born on Philippine Airlines en route from Manila to San Francisco. Also in 2011, a woman gave birth to a baby boy on an Alitalia flight from Milan to Paris.
