Buy or Make: What Foods Are Cheaper to Make at Home?

What do you feel about this article?

ABC News’ Becky Worley reports:

Every year there are 15,000 new food items added to grocery shelves. And thousands of them are pre-made versions of things people used to make at home. So when does it make sense to buy it and when is it better to make it?

Jennifer Reese, a California mother and author of  “Make the Bread, Buy the Butter,”  went on a year-long quest to figure that out.

Reese started seriously looking into the issue when she was laid off from her job and sought to save money on groceries.

“I’d rather make bread than run to the supermarket,” she said. “And it turns out to be a couple of dollars per loaf cheaper to make it than to buy it. ”

That’s right. According to Reese’s research, it costs her $1 to make a loaf of bread, than to spend $4.39 to buy it from the grocery store.

Here are the results of her research for other popular grocery items.

Maybe you should consider making these:

Hot dog buns: Homemade, 17 cents each; store bought, 37 cents each

Hummus: Homemade (1 cup), 85 cents; store-bought, $3.10

Guacamole: Homemade (1 cup), $1.50;  store-bought, $4.50

Frosting: Homemade (1 cup), $1; store-bought, $2.

Vanilla extract: Homemade (one ounce), 50 cents; store-bought, $4.50

Croutons: Homemade, free! store-bought, $2.30.

And you might want to buy these:

Sure. These may be cheaper homemade, but Reese thinks the time and hassle involved make store-bought preferable.

Lemonade: Cost isn’t a major factor, but the hassle makes buying preferable, Reese believes.

Potato chips: Homemade, 80 cents;  store-bought, $1.30

Rotisserie chicken: Homemade, $3.40 per pound;  store-bought, $3.60 per pound.

Some of these money saving segments are based on moronic premises. 4.39 for a loaf of bread? Really??? The grocery store brand large loaf is a little over a dollar. Hot dog rolls are a dollar a pack of 8. How foolish is it to base making your own items versus buying what must be high cost up-scale trendy things. It reminds me of the segment a few days ago on how to save money by renting things for a picnic and to make money by renting things too. I mean really, ten bucks to rent a cooler, she rented a car, even rented a friend, to go on the picnic. I could have had a delightful meal at a fancy restaurant for the same cost. Do these people not know how to look for low end items? Has no one at GMA ever gone into a grocery store and seen a cheap styrofoam cooler for a few bucks? Please let me do your shopping if I get to pocket the money you would waste doing it yourself.

I pay $1.09 for store brand bread and when I have the extra money, I splurge and get the $2.50 bread. $4.39 for a loaf? Maybe she needs to re evaluate where she shops....

Would be interested in seeing what 'bread' she would be buying for $4.39 a loaf...

it's probably whole grain, low sugar bread that costs so much because as we logically know the less a food is processed the more it costs. can't make a profit selling the whole grain at bleached grain prices.

If she's comparing costs (not flavor differences between homemade and store bought), did the woman factor in the cost of electricity/gas for operating kitchen appliances, as well as washing the extra dishes?

those prices are overinflated! LOL i sure don't want to shop where she shops! and i also want to know how croutons are free seeing you need bread to make them? you can buy them at the dollar store anyway not to mention that wallyworld sells them for around a dollar too. its good to make your own stuff sometimes but i think someone needs to teach this lady to shop cuz shes getting ripped off

This is all #$%$ the reason I write this is cause she didn't add the real cost as in electricity and gas or propane not to mention the unseen factors such as what is one cost in one town is totally different in another city. For instance in my neck of the woods vanilla beans are very expensive as well as good rum.
