Calif. Family Vows Not to Spend Money for Month

What do you feel about this article?

Calif. Family Vows Not to Spend Money for Month (ABC News)Some have heard of “frugal Fridays,” but the Dunning family in Davis, Calif., is practicing “frugal February.”

“Since my pockets were empty, it was not a real hard decision to make,”  writer Bob Dunning said.

The family of six has vowed not to do any discretionary spending for the month of February.

“It was interesting after spending so much money during the holidays, Christmas, to think, wow, how much could we cut back?” Shelley Dunning told ABC’s Sacramento affiliate, KXTV.

She said she hopes the experiment will “reset our clock on everything.”

“I hope that at the end of this month we can look back and say, gosh we had a lot of fun with each other,” she said.

Shelley Dunning said the family plans to eat a lot of rice and frozen meat, so they went to Costco on Jan. 31 to stock up on other foods like butter, pasta, nuts, and peanut butter and jam. The only miscellaneous thing the family plans to spend money on is fresh milk for the kids.

Bob Dunning clarifies that the family is just vowing against discretionary spending, like a coffee or movie tickets here and there.

“It adds up real fast and I wasn’t sure if we could do it or not,” he said.

And what about gas for the family’s car? The family plans to walk. That’s a good thing because the national weekly gas price average jumped 4 cents to $3.48 for regular for the week ending Feb. 6, up 35 cents from a year ago. Fortunately, Bob and Shelley both work from home.

Their children are learning to make do with less too. Maeve Dunning made a wallet out of duct tape. But son Mick Dunning is having a hard time.

“I have a lot of money I want to spend,” he said.

Looks like 7 to me. Unless 2 of those kids count as 1.

One of the children is an edible mannequin they bought at Costco.

If you spend a lot of money on 01/31 then don't spend during February how is that smart? You didn't prove anything to me except to get yourself in the news for being kind of weird. Overspending one month & not spending in the next is not smart. It is that old saying 6 of 1, half dozen of another.

The title of the article is completely misleading.

Not much different than what the US Government does on a regular basis if you think about out it. Cash for clunkers displaces cash earlier than the usual peak in car buying, thereby giving the illusion of a success. I

Heck I make that vow every month.

I fantasize about not paying my bills for a month. That would get me a few hundred.

On January 31, they stock up for the month of February.

And gas for the car?? They both work from home.

He's a writer, and they alerted the media to publicize their month of "frugality."

Does this sound like a PR stunt or what?

And the KEY to this article: "The family of six has vowed not to do any DISCRETIONARY spending for the month of February."

So spending for necessities is still a go.

I wish the $20 a month I have left over after paying rent, electric, car insurance and landline phone (no cell) didn't have to go towards gas or child care or clothes or school supplies or toliet paper or laundry soap, etc. Then maybe I can get a coffee (oh wait I do everyday for free at work) or go see a movie (oh that's right I have a friend that gives me their free redbox code every month). Sorry I have no sympathy for people who wine about not getting coffee or going out to eat or seeing a movie in a theater. Live within your means.

The trick is to save before you spend, even if it's just 20 or 50 dollars a month. If you don't have enough money to spend another $20 or $50 less is not going to make much of a difference, but if you saved those $20 or $50 a month, at least after being broke all the time all these years, you will have something saved up. When you retire, the chances are Social Security won't be there and even if it does, it's not going to be much. People needed to start planning for their retirement early on, it's more of a function of time than amount of money invested.
I have been saving what little I could before I paid for bills and food and stuff. Well... you get more picky about what you eat and what you spent on with little less money, but at least I could said at the rate it's been accumulating, I should be fine when I retire, even if Social Security wasn't there. and I am not counting on it to be there too.

I have a real problem with you behaving fraudulently against Redbox. They are not in business to LET YOU STEAL their movie rentals. You are not authorized to use someone else's account. I don't know what's "Free" about a Redbox authorization code - but I'm pretty certain it was never meant for you to use, since you obviously have no account... You should be ashamed. And, because you were so proud to disclose your fraudulent, stealing behavior for all the world to see, you've just proven that you lack something in the intelligence dept (just for starters). Only people who have low intelligence, or think they're immune from prosecution via internet postings (e.g., a narcissist), would tell the world these sorts of secrets. And I'm sure your friend is oh-so-thrilled with you for doing so as well. Because now his/her butt is on the line too... It's not about the value of what you're stealing - it's the low quality morality, and lack of character/good judgement you're putting on display here in telling us your dirty secrets...

So they stocked up and spent a lot of money doing so and later, they won't be buying things. They spent the money in advance.

Stocking up on food is an indicator that the FBI uses for terrorist. As is paying cash.

A writer is not spending discretionary funds is making money of it by publicizing it. Typical writer - look at me! Book deal coming soon. This is just about every month for my family.

Oh, they mean "DISCRETIONARY spending". And they just bought a lot of stuff the month BEFORE? I try not to spend anything, too, but those pesky Mortgage, Heating Oil, Electric, Gas, Food, Phone, Cable, Internet, Property tax and Insurance BILLS KEEP COMING!!

People with (some) money decide to live like people with no money.

Well good for them I guess. I would think those without would rather live like those with than the opposite but people are funny.
  • Leah  •  Columbus, Ohio  •  3 months ago
They stocked up on food - they didn't stock up on movies, clothing, or pre-buy a February vacation. They are trying to actually THINK before spending money on useless stuff. I don't see anything wrong with that. But I also don't think its newsworthy.
