Colorado Woman Spots Stolen Bike on Craigslist, Steals it Back

What do you feel about this article?

A Colorado woman took matters into her own hands when her bike was stolen from outside of a Boulder sports bar. She tracked down her stolen bike on Craigslist, pretended to be an interested buyer and stole back her own bike.

Kathryn Lucas, 25, parked her bike outside of a bar where she went to watch a University of Colorado football game on the night of Oct. 4, according to ABC News’ Denver affiliate KMGH.

When she left the bar to head home, she discovered that her black Trek 1.2 road bike was missing. After filing a police report, she and her roommate began searching Craigslist to see if the thief was trying to sell the bike.

Sure enough, Lucas found a posting with a photo of her bike.  She immediately recognized her bike’s red handle-bar tape and her water bottle holder.

Lucas responded to the Craigslist ad, pretending to be an interested buyer. Minutes later, a person using the name “Lance Robinson” responded with his phone number and instructed her to text him so he could send her his address.

On Sunday, Lucas went to the man’s apartment complex and asked if she could test ride the bike.

“I started riding it and knew it was my bike, so I just kept riding it,” Lucas told KMGH. “I rode it to my car and then threw it it in my car and then drove away.”

Lucas said she had not been planning on getting the bike back that way, but took advantage of an opportunity and made a spur-of-the-moment decision.

“They were a lot bigger than I thought they were,” Lucas said. “I thought it’d be like a little person that stole bikes and I’d be like, ‘Hey, I called the police and that’s my bike and you’re trying to sell it to me,’ but I just took it for a ride and went with it.”

After she had recovered her bike, Lucas called the police and gave them the thief’s address. “Lance Robinson” turned out to be 18-year-old Denzel O’Neal Crawford, who did not have a prior police record.

Crawford was arrested, confessed to stealing the bike and was released on bond. Police also told Lucas that, though her recovery mission was successful, it was not a tactic they recommend, according to KMGH.

“They told me for future reference that I probably would not want to do that by myself,” Lucas said.

So what...........to pay for that bike represents time the owner spent working to earn enough surplus income to afford the item. What the thief stole was time. The thief was looking for an easy windfall at someone else's expense. Only a bike...........right.

The sad thing is, this has no thumbs down, which means no one disagrees. (I know I agree with you.)

Our police force is supposed to be there to help us but they waste their time on petty traffic tickets to get more money. If they helped us more we'd probably vote for an increase in their funding. :-/

I did the same thing once-my bike was stolen out of my garage. I drove down the street and saw it in front of a grocery store, with some other fool there with it. I just walked up and said this is MY bike, and took it from him.

lmao, at the cops not recommending that approach. If she had called them and told them that the guy had the stolen bike, I doubt that they would have done anything. At least in my town they wouldn't have

My son had our car stolen while delivering pizzas. He was 18 years old. He also left my cell phone in the stolen car. We talked to the police about tracing the cell phone to find the car. They rudely told me I was watching to many detective movies and that stuff doesn't happen in the real world. I decided to leave my cell phone service on for another week. I checked with my carrier and sure enough the thief decided to use my cell phone. Sure...why not...it was his now...right! He called about 10 phone numbers. Instead of giving the information "directly" to the police I began calling each phone number myself. Well guess what happened next? One of the numbers I called was his stupid girl friend. I pursuaded her into giving me his street address or she woudl get in trouble for stealing the car. Then I called the police and gave them the thiefs address! When the police went to his house he denied everything. I also gave the police my old cell phone number so they called my number while talking to the thief on his front porch. It turned out he had the phone in his pocket and it rang right there on the porch. HA HA! Busted! They arrested him and charged him with car theft. The thief has actully changed the name on my phone to read, " PIMP DADDY" and it played some little rap song! So....Who's your Pimp Daddy now you little punk! Anyway, the police told me I should have never called those numbers or got involved...even after the case was solved. They are unbelievable...justice was served!

No she didn't "steal" it back. It was always hers. She simply found her bike and took it back home. The media and the police can both shove it!

I've always wanted to ask a person after they've been arrested and confessed "Why did you take it, What was going through your mind that made you decide to take something that wasn't yours" just out of curiosity because I can't imagine what makes it OK in your mind to take things that aren't yours.
