Elizabeth Smart's Surprise Wedding Guest and Other Wedding Details Revealed

What do you feel about this article?

When Elizabeth Smart confirmed her engagement on “Good Morning America” last month, she said she was ready to start  life with her fiance, 22-year-old Matthew Gilmour.

“I couldn’t be happier,” the 24-year-old said in a live appearance on “GMA”  Feb. 1.  ”We met abroad, and I can’t wait to start my life with him.”

Little did anyone know, including the bride’s best friend, that the wait for the young couple to start their lives together would be less than one month.

Smart and Gilmour were married Saturday  in Hawaii in a surprise and intimate ceremony at Laie Hawaii Temple of  the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, attended only by close family and friends, her spokesman, Chris Thomas, said in a statement.

A source close to the family told ABC News exclusively that Smart’s best friend, Katy Lund Burgess, booked a last-minute flight and arrived just in time for the wedding, joining Smart’s  family, including her  grandmother, who were also all  at the wedding on Oahu’s North Shore.

Burgess was a constant presence at Smart’s side during the 2010 trial of street preacher Brian David Mitchell who was convicted of sexually assaulting and kidnapping the then 14-year-old Smart, holding her hostage for nine months in 2002,  and is now serving a life sentence.

Smart, now a senior studying music at Brigham Young University, met Gilmour, of Aberdeen, Scotland, while doing Mormon missionary work in Paris, the Associated Press reported.

The couple was planning to marry this summer but moved up the wedding to Saturday to avoid attracting too much attention.

The family source confirmed to ABC News that the wedding party enjoyed an intimate luncheon and cake cutting at the island’s luxury Turtle Bay Resort after the ceremony.  The wedding festivities culminated with a private tour and evening wedding Luau at the nearby Polynesian Cultural Center.

“Elizabeth said her wedding far exceeded her wildest expectations, and enjoying it with the people she loves most made for one the greatest days of her life,” the source said.

Smart spoke at a child advocacy event  in South Carolina days before she flew with her parents, Ed and Lois Smart, from Salt Lake City to Hawaii, People magazine reported.

Since being found alive March 12, 2003, less than 18 miles from her home, Smart has committed herself to working  on behalf of crime victims, forming the Elizabeth Smart Foundation and working as a a paid contributor for “GMA”  on issues related to missing and exploited children.

“Her wedding further demonstrates it is possible to rise above challenging circumstances to lead a happy and productive life,” Smart’s spokesman said in a statement.  “Once Elizabeth returns from her honeymoon, she looks forward to continuing her child advocacy work.”

ABC News’ Leezel Tanglao and Lauren Effron contributed to this report.

A teenage runaway should be an inspiration for little girls to stay home.

M, she wasn't a teenage runaway...she was kidnapped out of her bedroom in the middle of the night by a very unstable man that kept her hostage for approx. 9 months and raped her many times (and he had a 'wife' that helped hold her as well) before someone recognized who she was since he had her dressed in a disguise. She MOST DEFINITELY is an inspiration to more than just little girls; she bravely faced her kidnappers in court and helped put them behind bars and continues to live her life talking to young people about her experience and how she survived, in hopes that she can help someone else.

Congrats to the young girl (being traumatized as she was) who has grown into a beautiful well rounded young lady! She does deserve to be happy after all that her and her family have been through. And, yes, Beckster, I agree with you too that she is a huge inspiration to so many girls (unfortunately way too many) everywhere. She has shown such resilience after all that she did go through. I think that in itself shows how much support her entire family was and has been for her (and her sister as well- the one that shared the bedroom with her and witnessed it) and allowed them to heal in their time frame away from the press with only very occasional interviews. Congrats Elizabeth and Matthew!! May the two of you find joy and happiness in all that you do together in your new life!

It's a wonder she can trust a male after what she went through. From what I've heard of her, she seems well-adjusted. I don't think I would be.

I'm not a expert on her Morman faith or any faith for that matter but if its what got her through the ordeal she went through then let it be. I think almost 10 years is time enough to heal well enough to move forward. The bumps in the road (memories) will come whether she is married or not. I say go for some happiness & deal with the rest as it comes. It doesnt have to dominate her life. More power to her. My wish for her is many happy years ahead to her and her new husband.

Some of the people commenting here need to get a life outside of the computer. Elizabeth was a young girl when she was abducted and raped by a fiend. She had to overcome something that I wouldn't wish on anyone and has done it admirably. When I read some comments that are beyond the realm of decency, I wonder if these people are so unhappy that they cannot be happy for anyone. In my opinion anyone who doesn't wish this young couple well is not playing with a full deck.

Well, if she stopped going on tv and having her spokesman or "family members" talk about her private life to the media, maybe they will.
