Emotional Garth Brooks Testifies About Donation
Country star Garth Brooks
is expected back in court today to make his final plea in turning around his mother's legacy in a dispute over a donation he made in her name to an Oklahoma hospital. Brooks spent almost seven hours on the stand Friday, giving what was described as emotional testimony.
A tearful Brooks told the jury "She was my buddy…I was her biggest fan," and "If anybody met her, [they] would have gotten to love her."
Brooks also described his mother's life. "My mom was pregnant as a teenager. She had a rough start. She wanted to help every kid out there."
His mother, Colleen Brooks, died of cancer in 1999. In 2005, Brooks donated $500,000 to the Integris Canadian Valley Hospital for a woman's center named after his mother.
The center was never built and Brooks sued in 2009. He claimed that he had a verbal agreement with the hospital and was shown mock-ups of a building with his mother's name.
The hospital insists that there were never any conditions to the donation.
Brooks requests that the money be returned to him or donated to another charity.
The jury will decide the case as early as Tuesday.
