Forever 21 Criticized for ‘Oriental Girl Necklace’

What do you feel about this article?

Forever 21 has the Internet buzzing with an “Oriental Girl Necklace” that some shoppers are calling offensive for its stereotypical depiction of an Asian woman and the use of the outdated term “Oriental.”

The charm is of a white-faced girl with her black hair styled in two buns over her ears. It is on sale for $1.50 on the Forever 21 website.

There is debate, however, in the online world about whether the item is offensive or racist. Many of those who believe it is offensive comment that the issue is with the word “Oriental,” which is often regarded as a derogatory word when referring to people.

“Apparently, Forever 21 thinks that people want to wear outdated, cultural stereotypes as necklaces, and that it’s okay to sell them,” wrote Dhani Mau of style website “Fashionista.”

Others think the criticism is an over-reaction and say the charms aren’t offensive.

One commenter wrote, “People need to grow thicker skin, get a sense of humor and stop yelling racism at every little thing.”

Forever 21 did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Cultural caricatures were the target of a recent effort by an Ohio University student group poster campaign denouncing “racist” Halloween costumes.

The posters showed students of a different ethnicities holding photographs of an offensive costume. An Asian girl holds an image of someone dressed up as a geisha. A Mexican boy holds a photo of someone in a sombrero, colorful poncho and exaggerated mustache riding a stuffed donkey.

Each poster has two sentences on it: “We’re a culture, not a costume.” And “This is not who I am, and this is not okay.”

“Fashionista” also spotted a necklace in a Forever 21 store with a Native American girl charm that is not available online. This charm has a tan-skinned girl with exaggerated rosy cheeks sporting her hair in two braids and wearing a “traditional” Native American dress.

Urban Outfitters was recently slammed by the Navajo Nation for its ‘Navajo’ line that included the “Navajo Print Fabric Wrapped Flask” and the “Navajo Hipster Panty.” Under pressure, the company eventually dealt with the situation by replacing the word “Navajo” with “Printed” in the product names, but left the products up.

This is not the first time that Forever 21 has been at the center of a controversy surrounding a product. In September, outraged consumers denounced the brand’s “Allergic to Algebra” shirt marketed to girls and teenagers. The shirt was criticized for sending an anti-education message to girls. The company ultimately pulled the shirt from its website.

I think White and Caucasian are racist terms.
    How about European-Americans.
Seems whites are the ONLY race without some stupid name.

Caucasian is a stupid term anyway. How many people come from the Caucasus region anyway? Nobody in my family.

OMG, I am a from Caucasus? Dang, I better find out what religion they are and have a flag made to put on my car and paint my house of the Caucasian colors and start protesting and whining and expect the US government to cater to my grievances for the horrid life I have here, that I have chosen to be here. Oh yes, and a national holiday to celebrate my heritage. Do Caucasians have mosques? I want a mosque with all the trimmings of my Caucasian heritage so I can dream about and honor MY homeland while I make US dollars and send them back home to my Caucasian heritage family. I heard if you're not american then you can get more than those stupid americans from the american government. I don't even think I will learn the language. I will request they include Caucasian dialect on all government documents so I can read them, and everywhere so I will not have to learn the language. That would be hard.

So, as a Scandinavian I am officially offended by all depictions of Vikings. My Czech-Roma blood boils at all the "gypsy" skirts and fortune telling gypsies and my English/Scottish blood demands that there be NO more "Oliver Twist" costumes or guys with kilts and bagpipes! Enough already. Everything should be muted and beige. That's how we celebrate our...diversity?

Jeez people, why feel the need to censor your culture. Just because someone dresses up in your cultural dress does not mean that it is meant to be offensive. Why couldn't it be meant as a compliment, to your heritage? Others finding your culture intriguing or beautiful.
"Oriental" could be offensive because it was the term used in the past to describe someone of Asian descent, or coming from the Orient. But I don't really understand what is offensive about the term. I know that it is considered to be of bad taste, but I don't pick up on what is so distasteful on commenting on the culture that ones ancestors came from.

Screw all the Politically Correct #$%$ Soon if this keeps up we will be afraid to talk with anyone that looks different then us and next we will all be afraid to go out in public. Read the book "The Naked Sun" to see how bad it could get in the future.

“People need to grow thicker skin, get a sense of humor and stop yelling racism at every little thing.”
I agree 100% with this statement. It has gotten to the point where people scream racism for no other reason than to draw attention to themselves and express self-rightous indignation!

Oriental means "of the Orient", which includes China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Taiwan, India, etc.
If they were smart, it would have been an Indian person, not the typical Chinese girl.

This is where political correctness goes too far with what is acceptable and what is not.
The same "thought police" types call the storybook "Little Black Sambo" racist. It isn't. Little Black Sambo is a INDIAN child.

Political correctness is a cancer that must be removed.

And the word orient means east, so the full definition is "of the east"
    • Carl 6 months ago
The Orient traditionally includes the Middle East you know so not a good term for Chinese/Japanese type imagery.

Contrary to what AJ said, if they were stupid they would call it "Oriental girl" and use a traditional South Indian costumed girl.

Originally Little black sambo may have been a South Indian child but the culture of the time transformed the character into a caricature of a black person because of the "black" in the title and the dark features of the character. Even if it were Indian I'm pretty sure South Indians would still be offended by the caricature.

I'd like to point out that I used to work for Forever 21. I myself am "Oriental" and I've walked by this necklace a million times. Its not offensive. Its just a necklace. People should do more research and realize that the owner of the company, Don Chang is infact a native South Korean.

Little Geisha would be a good name.
    • Laura 6 months ago
I think it's is a cute name...but someone would find something to beef about with this... ",Little"would indicate ,that she was not of average stature .. and Geisha would mean she was a servant for manly pleasures.. you can't win in this day and age.. people need to get a grip!!!..

Oriental is not a racist slur. It may sound antiquated and scholarly, but it's definitely not an offensive term. It comes from the Latin term for Eastern. It means the opposite of Occidental which means Western. We have a Mandarin Oriental hotel chains which doesn't conjure any racial overtones whatsoever.
  • no one  •  6 months ago
This is crazy! SAying Oriental isn't offensive..I say that all the time..to my Oriental friends! I bet someone is looking for a silly lawsuit here. You think I'm gonig to get my panties up in knots if someone holds up a picture of a fat, dirty looking American when I say i'm from the US? Nope....I could care less.

Been using 'oriental' all of my life and I'm not stopping for some 'get-me-in-the-news' faux politically correct advocate; leave America alone!

I question the emotional stability of anyone that is offended by calling an east asian heritage person a word that literally means "of the east."
  • Yes, YOU!  •  6 months ago
It might be better if I gave a Oriental a pearl necklace
  • Barbara  •  6 months ago
So..do I get to get all outraged when people wear wooden shoes, braids and pointy hats and say they are Dutch? How about (gasp) people "mocking" my German heritage by wearing Lederhosen, drinking beer and listening to "Ein Prosit" during Ocktoberfest? This whole "cultural racism" argument is STUPID.
  • Betty  •  6 months ago
I agree! People are getting way too sensitive over nothing! I'm Chinese and I am not offended by the term oriental at all. These people just wanna find faults and fight about pointless things.

In Taiwan, there’s a snack food brand called “Everyone Says Good Good Eat”, that always has an cartoon character of a cute Asian girl. One of the snacks has fish cakes the shape of her caricatured head floating among noodles. On another one of the packages, she has a band-aid on her face, because you’re supposed to break apart the snack before you open the package – by punching her in the face.

I think this jewelry is politically correct in comparison.

"A doctrine fostered by a delusional, illogical minority and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end."
