Garth Brooks Sues Hospital Over $500,000 Donation

What do you feel about this article?

Perhaps inspired by the lyrics of his hit song, "Do What You Gotta Do," country music star Garth Brooks has sued his hometown hospital for allegedly not using his $500,000  donation for what he says he and the hospital agreed it would.

The singer says he made the donation to Integris Canadian Valley Regional Hospital in Yukon, Okl.,in 2005, after the hospital promised to name a building after his mother, Colleen Brooks, who passed away of cancer in 1999.

Brooks says hospital officials had courted him for two years, soliciting a donation to honor his late mother. He says they showed him mock-ups of a building in the hospital complex bearing his mother's name in neon lights and planned a ribbon-cutting ceremony introducing the Colleen Brooks building to the public.

But then, Brooks' attorneys say, almost three years after the donation, the hospital told the singer his donation would be "used for what Integris had 'earmarked' the money for, without further discussion."

His suit seeks the full $500,000 donation back.

In court filings, the hospital says his donation was "anonymous and unconditional" and that Brooks changed his tune by adding conditions to the gift after it was given.

"Unfortunately, talks broke down or did not continue or Mr. Brooks was not satisfied with the options we were offering, and that's when he decided to sue," hospital spokesman Hardy Watkins said Tuesday before the trial began.

Brooks' spokeswoman on Tuesday described the musician as "stunned and hurt" by the hospital's failure to name anything for his mother.

Brooks made an appearance Tuesday afternoon in an Oklahoma courtroom where jury selection for his case was finalized.  He was accompanied by his wife, fellow country superstar Trisha Yearwood.

The Associated Press reports none of the potential jurors were removed from consideration, even though nearly every member raised their hands when the singer's lawyer asked whether they had heard of Brooks.

The judge swore in 12 jurors and planned to pick an alternate.   Opening statements in the trial are scheduled to begin today.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

It doesn't sound plausible that he would make up the story about his mother after donating the money and then sue for it. It sounds like the hospital made the agreement, and never intended to honor it all along.

That said, why wouldn't they just name a building after his mother and go on about the business of treating sick people. It sounds like there are some bruised egos serving on the board of directors.

I don't even like Garth because of some of the news he made and his own greedy tendencies. Yet I think the agreement was made like he said. The donation had conditions.

Ah, yes, you believe his story why? Cause you like his music? Cause those country singers are good christians that wouldn't make stuff up? Or maybe you just don't like hospitals and think the health care industry is a bunch of elitists trying to rip off the general public with their collusion between doctors, insurance, hospitals and politicans?

@Whistlepunk more like greedy board of directors:) @Kyle most of the hospitals and insurance are elitists ripping people off. Tell why an asprin should cost 1.25-5.00 in the emergency room?

I bet they had a wonderful time at thier lavish X-MAS party. Thanks Garth! CEO got a unusual larger bonus for claiming rights for making sure money seemed it was going where was supposed to. Rest of workers got thier usual 1% yearly raise.

Hospital operates like a business. It's not a place to treat illness people anymore. I don't think Garth gave the money and told them do whatever they want to do with it and then turned around with a new condition. If he wants to honor his mom, I don't see why the hospital resisted and still took his money. I'm sure other places would love to have that 1/2 mill.

Just give him his money back. He has the right to donate it for a specific purpose if he wants to. It's his money.

What made him think that 500k would even purchase the building permit from the county in the first place? Hey, there are a lot of palms to be greased.
    • William Hayes 3 months ago
500k is not that much for a wing. most donate over a million dollars. if they gave their word though they need to follow through. i bet they counted on getting more money.
    • errrk 3 months ago
It's not his money anymore if he donated it. It's not his anymore so it's no longer his say on what should be done with it.

google "The Donor bill of rights" and YES, Garth can direct his gift. If not, the charity has to have the option of returning the money and or seek permission to re-direct. This is sad, but not uncommon. Go get 'em, Garth!

Exactly, Maureent. I honor someone who just gave you $500,000, what in the heck can it hurt?

I'm not a fan of Brook's, but I think he's telling the truth. Even if he did ask that a wing of the hospital be dedicated to his late mother AFTER the donation was made, I don't think it was too much to ask for. After all, that was a very generous donation.

I think Garth is going about this the right way... whether you are rich or poor, when you make a promise, you need to keep it. He donated all this money and all he wanted was a building named after his mom... they should have kept their promise.
  • Rachel S  •  3 months ago
What is so hard about naming a building after someones mom when they gave you 500,000. Nice way to shoot yourself in the foot and mess up any chance of future donations from Garth or any other wealth friends he has.

Garth, when you get your money back, take it and give it to someone like St Judes. They are true to their word! May God bless them.

To those who are saying Garth is lying...try having a bit more common decency and CHOOSE to do a little more digging...I did...and the institution did EXACTLY what Garth is claiming they did.

Which means...even medical institutions are greed mongering, lying, vile, FRAUDS...clearly evident by the outcome of Garth's donation....which he has EVERY right to stipulate what the money IS to be used for...since it is HIS money.

    Inexcusable, unnecessary and disgusting......

What the Hostipal did was wrong,And first of all they should of never bugged him for a doantion for the hostipal,His Donation is his choice and since he did give $500,000 and did so They should honor his wishes to honor his Mother,And if they couldn't do that ,The hostipal shouldn't taken his money knowing they were not going to do it,That is fraud on the hostipal part,My Heart goes out to Garth and Trish losing a parent is hard I know,I am greiving the loss of my Mother from cancerin 2010 ,father 2002,2 sisters 1998 at 50 and another in 2005 at 51 and now asister 50 once again who is battling and fighting for her life all cancer,And it #$%$ me off to see so maney things hostipal do that are wrong,I am not asking pity for me ,But what they done is a disgrace to his mother and Garth,And I hope and pray he win and makes then give him back his money,And she can't even get them to help her with the insure to drink and they are straving her to death,What ever happen to a oarth, where is there moral,They have to live with there guilt and they will meet there maker and pay that price also.MY Hat is off to you and you wanted your mom name on a building ,Then they didn't,You derseve every penny is not more for the pain and suffering ,Then if you do and I pray you do then I would maybe do a stone and donation a tree in a local park in honor of your mom ,and then you can watch it grow and see it and remember that her love still grow more for you and you see ,I did that and sometimes I go to that park alot and I feel at peace ,because a park of her is there with me and I have watched it grow .Best Wishes Nancy Patterson Irondale Mo

Brilliant move on the part of the hospital. Their reneging on their promise is really going to attract more money from potential millionaire donors. I know I certainly wouldn't give them a cent.
  • Bradley Pitman  •  3 months ago
I got to side with Garth on this one. He obviously felt deeply enough to warrant a donation, and also wanted to respect his lost Mother. I would be mighty #$%$ if this happened to me. If they had not used the money for what they said, then what DID they use it for,( I smell corruption)? If they were smart, they would name the building, when it is complete, after his mother. OR, give him the money back. Otherwise, he is giving them a "gift" that is not accountable. Go GB, I'm with you here.

You beg a man for HIS money, promise to build a wing honoring his mother, then welch on the deal? He should get triple damages!.

They'll name a vase after her, the "Collen Brooks memorial vase", and use the money for a bonus for the hospital administrator.
  • BobbyW  •  3 months ago
Did he actually make up the part about them showing him mock-ups of his mother's building? If the story is that it was completely unconditional, are they saying the mock-ups were because their kid likes to make models of buildings that will never exist?

That is a very specific story to completely fabricate.
