Since splitting from hubby Tom Cruise in June, Katie Holmes and her 6-year-old daughter Suri have been spotted grabbing snacks and taking walks around New York City almost every day.

But one month after finalizing the divorce, Holmes stepped out in New York City Wednesday night for her first real public appearance at the 9th Annual Style Awards in Lincoln Center.

The actress, dressed in a black button-down and gold knee-length skirt, looked at ease as she presented an award to fashion designer Carolina Herrera.

Holmes, 33, also walked the red carpet for the event, posing with Herrera, and shared a hug with actress Amy Adams, the Daily Mail reported.

The actress will be in the spotlight again next week. Holmes is set to present her Holmes & Yang fashion line Wednesday for New York's Fashion Week.

Holmes has also reportedly signed a deal with Bobbi Brown Cosmetics, according to Women’s Wear Daily magazine. She will be the first celebrity face for the brand.

Later this fall, she will star in Broadway's "Dead Accounts."

In the Sept. 6 interview with WWD, Holmes discussed her fashion line and the collaboration with Brown, but steered clear of personal topics.

Asked where Suri would attend school in the fall, Holmes replied: “They’ll find out in due time,” according to the article.

But she did talk about some of her activities with her daughter. She said doing crafts with Suri helped her remain grounded, even when the project wasn’t so successful.

“I’ve always painted and done crafts at home — I have to stay creative in every aspect [of my life]. My sister teaches art, and she gives me a lot of ideas,” she said.

Holmes said she likes to try something new every day, and isn’t afraid to fail.

“Who cares? At least you tried,” she told the magazine. “It’s usually the people who haven’t tried who are the naysayers.”
