Given their way, some conservatives would jump at any chance to round out South Dakota’s iconic Mt. Rushmore with their hero 40th president, Ronald Reagan.

“Reagan was the most successful president of the 20th century,” Reagan Legacy Project Chairman Grover Norquist told Devin Dwyer of ABC News earlier this year. “He took a country that was in economic collapse and military in retreat round the globe and turned it completely around.

Congress rejected the notion 12 years ago but the monument’s 70th birthday today is a reminder that the monument of Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln and Roosevelt is incomplete with or without another face: The sculptor died before finishing Washington’s waist and coat, and Lincoln’s hands, according to the Rapid City, S.D.,  tourism website.

Here are some other things you might not know about the memorial to U.S. history:

* The project took 14 years and cost about $1 million;

* The carvings are scaled to people who would be 465 feet tall;

* Each head is 6 stories tall;

* The carvings displaced 800 million pounds of stone;

* The noses are 20 feet long;

* The workers climbed 506 steps each day.

Sculptor Gutzon Borglum, who started the project at age 60, died unexpectedly seven months before the project was declared complete Oct. 31, 1941, built on his desire to “show posterity what manner of men they were. Then breathe a prayer that these records will endure until the wind and the rain alone shall wear them away.”

    14 years and cost $1 million. Today that same project would cost about $100 million.....

      It cost $1 million at the time, which, after inflation, should be more. Honestly though, your $100 statement is more than likely pretty accurate :/

      $1 Million in the 1930's was a lot more in today's dollars...

      The Crazy Horse Monument is privately funded by donations. Any futher monuments should also be funded by donations.

    Just leave it alone. The way the government does things, they would destroy the originals while trying to complete the addition, and then run out of money before the project was completed.

      Exactly, I have seen it myself, It's one place everyone should see. They would knock ABES head off or some nose and there ya go. Even if they wanted to put Reagan on there? No, just leave it the way it is.

      Yep, because HE RAISED TAXES BY THE LARGEST AMOUNT IN HISTORY! (Not Clinton)

    I think they should leave it as is...as much as Reagan was respected (or vilified, depending on which party you talk to) ..leave it like it is, please..
    • JD 6 months ago
      Agreed. Reagan was a phony. If ANY Republican should be there, it would be Dwight Eisenhower...not only a great President, but a war hero to boot. But, I agree. Leave it as it is. Deciding who should go up there would only divide us more.

      To many of us Reagan was the beginning of our downfall. So no, leave it alone.

      We shouldn't even name aircraft carriers after presidents that served so recently. Naming the USS Bush while his son was president is a disgrace. We a presidents name is used, it should be well after those that lived during their time are also gone and history has had time to see their sealed records, etc. and see how they are ultimately judged by history before their name is used.

    I don't want any of my tax money to be used to honor a man who does not deserve any honor. Personally, he was a very likeable and sweet person but presidentally, he was a mess. He is the one who started the great homeless street people by turning all mental patients out on the street. He did not cause the "great wall" to be torn down; that had been in the works several months before he said a word about it. These are minor things compared to the Iran-contra scandal. He used tax dollars to train military forces and give weapons to a group of fat cats whose armies killed thousands of common people who were
    fighting for their freedom in Central America.

    I agree with everyone. Leave Mount Rushmore alone. I visited it when I was younger, Its already a natural wonder. No need to spend more money that the government doesnt have.
  • Jungle_Junkie  •  6 months ago
    Mt. Rushmore is a historical monument, not some sort of "presidential hall of fame" at the mercy of congress or some other committee of goofballs.

    Once they start "adding" another face or make some drastic change to the monument, there will be no limit to what they can do further down the road. The monument was finished with the death of the sculptor. Any further changes would be disprespecful and constitute vandalism.

    Let's be sensible -- this is just not going to happen. Period. SHAME on ABC News for stirring people up. This is one of the reasons why I so heartily detest the media.

    Why screw up it a piece of history, these four presidents did more for this country in their few years than all those that followed. Leave it be.
  • Eric B  •  6 months ago
    Why not? Let's go "correct" the leaning tower of Pisa, "improve" the Sistine Chapel, and "restore" the Mona Lisa while we're at it.

    What would be truly American is to outsource making the statue to China and have it installed by illegal aliens.
