With Reporting By ABC News' Pierre Thomas and Jason Ryan:

Steve Jobs, the Apple co-founder who transformed personal computing, communications and other fields with such products as the iPhone and iPad, also had a 191-page FBI file that detailed a federal background check, a bomb threat on his home, and second-hand reports of drug use.

Released today under a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request, the FBI file shows that Jobs' background was checked in 1991 for an appointment to the White House Export Council under President George H.W. Bush; and that he and other Apple employees were targets of a bomb threat in 1985.

The file reveals no felony convictions and dryly lists lawsuits in which Jobs was involved, but also cites unnamed associates who mentioned Jobs' drug use and questioned his "honesty."

In the 1991 FBI background investigation, an agent wrote, "Several Individuals commented concerning past drug use on the part of Mr. Jobs." It adds, "Mr. Jobs also commented concerning his past drug use." (p.37)

On the same page: "Several individuals questioned Mr. Jobs' honesty, stating that Mr. Jobs will twist the truth and distort reality in order to achieve his goals."

"[Name redacted] also advised that he was aware that Mr. Jobs used illegal drugs, including marijuana and LSD while they were attending college." (p. 41)

The file also notes (p. 40) that "based on the background information furnished by Mr. Jobs, he has no close relatives residing in communist-controlled countries." Former associates at Apple said they "recommended him for a position of trust with the Government."

The file was posted on the FBI website this morning. Most of it was compiled at the request of the White House in 1991, when Jobs was president of NeXT computers and owner of the then-struggling Pixar software company, which would later make such films as "Toy Story." Jobs, ousted from Apple in a 1985 power struggle, returned in 1996 and became its CEO in 1997.

The 1985 bomb threat concerns someone who was demanding $1 million and claimed to have placed explosives in Jobs' home along with those of three other Apple employees. The threat was traced to a hotel near the San Francisco Airport Hilton.

he was only a few years older than me, so you can rule out 60's drug use. maybe 73 or so.

Marijuana's a stepping stone drug. First you smoke a little pot, and the next thing you know you've started a computer firm.

Because the government is all up in our business when they have no need or reason to be. This is something I believe would happen in China, Russia, Syria, Iran, and Nazi Germany. Look no further than our government!

Sure pick on a dead man to detract from real issues in the here and now living world.
How about FBI files on the people who are supposed to be running this country? Our life is in their hands and they get away with anything they want, no questions, no consequences.
Do these Yahoo reporters actually get paid to put out snipets of stuff? Seems to me there are unemployed folds who could write at least as well as these reporters. Wonder where they get their leads for the little bit of information written. Always seems like something is missing. Scraping the bottom of the barrel?
It is easy to write stories about bad things happening, those topics are all over the place and don't have to work too hard to find them. I would like to see more actual uplifting, useful articles. People need to see something happier and brighter. Its out there but nobody wants to dig for it. And our society seems to gobble up the rotten stories. No wonder the mindset is so poor.

me thinks the feds would do better devoting their "limited tax payer funded resources" to monitoring the scrofulous fish of Fraud Street, and Washington DC.

Why does the FBI keep those kinda records on America executives? They should be hunting terrorist me thinks, not stocking up on data for witch hunts.

This is pathetic. Why is someone's background even addressed after that person's death, unless the background is relevant to the death?

I believe Steve Jobs was a very gifted and intelligent man, but very flawed. I need and hope that more information is made available to the American people concerning Apple. I have heard of a 400k man factory in China. The workers live in dorm facilities surrounded with nets to help reduce the number suicides. The long hours and living condition are taking a toll. Mr Jobs exported the jobs from here, but left the work rules behind.
