Top Susan G. Komen Official Resigns After Planned Parenthood Flap

What do you feel about this article?

A top official at the Susan G. Komen for the Cure breast cancer foundation resigned today following the charity's decision to reverse its policy barring funding for Planned Parenthood.

Karen Handel, a former Republican gubernatorial candidate in Georgia, denied in her resignation letter that she had anything to do with the decision to end funding for Planned Parenthood, which she says was made under guidelines formulated before she was hired.

Critics of the foundation's decision linked the move to Handel, a vocal opponent of abortion and Planned Parenthood.

"I am deeply disappointed by the gross mischaracterizations of the strategy, its rationale, and my involvement in it. I openly acknowledge my role in the matter and continue to believe our decision was the best one for Komen's future and the women we serve," she wrote in the letter that was obtained by several media outlets. "However, the decision to update our granting model was made before I joined Komen, and the controversy related to Planned Parenthood has long been a concern to the organization. Neither the decision nor the changes themselves were based on anyone's political beliefs or ideology."

"What was a thoughtful and thoroughly reviewed decision - one that would have indeed enabled Komen to deliver even greater community impact - has unfortunately been turned into something about politics. This is entirely untrue. This development should sadden us all greatly," she added.

Handel declined a severance package.

The Susan G. Komen foundation confirmed Handel's resignation and acknowledged "mistakes" in the way it handled the controversy that erupted last week.

"We have made mistakes in how we have handled recent decisions and take full accountability for what has resulted, but we cannot take our eye off the ball when it comes to our mission," the organization's chief executive and founder, Nancy Brinker, said in a statement. "Today I accepted the resignation of Karen Handel… I have known Karen for many years, and we both share a common commitment to our organization's lifelong mission, which must always remain our sole focus. I wish her the best in future endeavors."

Can we all finally go back to donating to the American Cancer Society? They don't spend all this money on marketing and they are dedicated to the cause of curing ALL cancer. Oh, and no past/present relationship to PP.

We should continually look at all of these huge charities to see where the money is actually going. Greed can work its slimy fingers into anything, that's what it's good at.

In all this controversy, more important facts are overlooked.
In 2007, Komen spent 23.5% of total revenue on "Research for the cure".
In 2008, Komen spent 26.7% of total revenue on "Research for the cure".
In 2009, Komen spend 20.2% of total revenue on "Research for the cure".
That's a SEVENTY-FIVE PERCENT overhead. Komen is a scam to enrich somebody, I guess that's how they can afford executive salaries of a HALF-MILLION DOLLARS!

Komen is all about getting the name Komen on everything, nothing at all about beating cancer or helping women.

A lot of it evidently goes to the involuntary funding of abortion.

So many people who were against the de-funding decision up and quit at first, that the decision to do this looked fishy from the start. Komen also defunded about $12 million of embryonic stem cell research last year too. Sounds super fishy that all these changes went into affect after a hyper-drive pro-lifer came on.

Komen gives 20% of the donations to the cause. The rest is eaten up in administrative salaries and marketing. They are a very effective, massive marketing organization. If you really want to help, go give your money directly to a hospital or to PP. These charities sometimes get too big for their own good. Look at the Red Cross controversies over the years....

Under the rules of 501 C3 organizations, and FOIA--it is very easy to find out where the money goes. Minimum money to "walk for the cause" $2500.00 which Korman would be more than happy to help you raise with their professional fund raisers...ummmm--And at the minimum need drivers, equipment movers, and food providers to support the walk....and advertisers and I am sure the shirts are not provided for free.....

This is supposed to be charity not politics. I have donated to this charity in the past and will stop now. I have been slowly getting away from donating to large charity organizations that get political or spend to much on administration and marketing. I now give to small charities I can personally see where the money is going. To much time is wasted on things like this and the cancer victims are forgotten.

I stopped giving to charities.. most are riddled with corruption or something.. I'd much help a person directly than throw some money out there and hope for the best.. you never really know where it goes..

SGK will cease to exist in less than two years. They have managed to upset their donors on both sides of the issue and they will lose the vast majority of their corporate sponsors who don't want to be involved in this issue. The entire board should resign immediately.

If she had nothing to do with the decision, as she says, why did she resign? Did she resign because they reversed the decision, or was there some other reason?

As others have said, no one forces you to contribute to a charity. If the charity conforms to your point of view, and you believe in its mission, contribute. Otherwise, find another charity.

Good riddance to bad rubbish. Personally, I think Handel''s statement is full of misrepresentations and is a disingenuous attempt to whitewash herself. II'll be very interested to see if the Handel debacle has a permanent effect on SGK. They have certainly lost my support, as I no longer have confidence in them, and there are other organizations that I can donate to.

women are often embarrassed to talk about STD with a family dr, PP is a great place to get checked. I used PP myself in college many times for that. (condoms dont protect against all STD). never got birth control or an abortion there. close PP, and you cut off that option for young women, and STD rates will rise again.

Komen should have kept out of politics. They will never fully recover from this.

someone finally made the right call. As much as she denies it - she knows she was to blame for this fiasco. She has no business being involved in charity OR politics for that matter. Now if netflix would just fire Reed for his stupidity. netflix used to be cool. but for both organizations...the damage has been done. I will give my money DIRECTLY to those in need. I am no longer going to finance hatred and politics with SGK. have you seen the salaries they make? 25 cents or less out of every dollar goes towards those in need. The rest buys big homes and fancy cars for "admin". In the future I will go into a hospital and talk with the patients and hand them my money DIRECTLY!!! As a bonus I will KNOW whom I am helping! and those in need will no longer have to jump through hoops to get it. They have enough on their plates already!

Beware giving donations to any organization of people who obviously pay themselves so handsomely. Check the BBB to see how much of your donations go to the actual activity... and how much goes to "overhead". You'll be quite surprised.

Ok, so the next yahoo headline I want to see is "Salaries of Charitable Organizations Staff". Yes kiddies, some of your donations go towards salaries!

Boycott Komen. There are many other organizations that are working to help women and others deal with cancer and are not involved in politics. The leaders of Komen are making over $600,000.
  • Paul  •  3 months ago
Nancy Brinker and Karen Handel made this decision and Handel is the one falling on her sword. Brinker was the leader who made this happen and she must also resign. The organization is damaged and will not recover until the head of the snake is cut off.

Most so-called charities are bogus rip-offs managed by those who would line their pockets with up to 90 or more percent of the donations from people who do not know about the scams puled by the charities. I had a friend who worked for a major charity that specialized in people who in many cases were wheelchair bound and had little use of their limbs. This friend was the comptroller. He had a Jaguar company car, a lavish expense account, a high salary, showed up at 10 or 11 in the morning, and was home by 5. He used the charity phone system for business telephone calls relating to his own accounting practice. On the other hand, the Salvation Army is a stellar charity that invests 80 percent or more of its donations in the people it helps to survive. They are a terrific outfit, a model charity. Most other charities are high-class shams. The picture of a Planned Parenthood building at the top of this article sure looks like it is a high-digs office complex. How much of their donations go toward a good purpose, rather than inflated salaries, company cars for theo executives, lavish expense accounts, and so on?
