  • Two newborn kittens who were accidentally packed into a box and shipped from Hollywood, Calif., to San Diego had the good fortune of being opened by a man whose relative works for the local humane society.

"When I first saw them, I knew they were very, very young," JC Collins, a Cox Communications employee at the company's Chula Vista, Calif., office who opened the box with the kittens inside, told ABC affiliate KGTV.

Collins immediately called his nephew, an investigator at the San Diego Humane Society. The shelter happens to be one of the few in the country to have an around-the-clock nursery for kittens.

That early care likely saved the lives of the kittens who were so newborn they still had their umbilical cords attached when they reached the shelter, Humane Society nurse Jenny Bonomini told KGTV.

Exactly how the kittens made it unnoticed from Hollywood to San Diego - a 126 mile journey - in a Cox Communications semi-trailer is uncertain.

Rule No. 7 is "Do not tell on bullies."

Josh Mehlin, a parent who has children in the Lincoln Public School District, told ABCNews.com that the letter did not go home to all Zeman Elementary School students - only some fifth-graders - but it quickly spread as flabbergasted parents started sending it to each other.

"I was horrified," Mehlin said. "I called the school and said, 'Is this for real or is this kind of an Internet thing?' They said, 'This is for real. We sent this out.'"

When he called the district office, however. administrators said they'd never heard of it. So believes it may have originated with just one educator, Mehlin said.

The district has since issued an apology, explaining in a public statement on its Facebook page that the flier contained "inaccurate information."

  • A cat that high tailed it out a third floor window when the building caught fire survived the plunge with a bit a luck and agility.

The cat was caught on camera jumping from a third-story window Tuesday afternoon as flames engulfed the Evander Square apartment building in Celebration, Fla.

"When we broke the glass the cat jumped and tried to scale on the side of the wall," Daniel McAvoy, deputy chief of the Osceola County Fire Rescue, told GoodMorningAmerica.com. "It caught a ledge as it went down running and ended up going down to the ground and was fine."

"Cats almost always fall to their feet and that's exactly what happened here," McAvoy said.

The fire in the 24-unit apartment building was sparked by a lightning strike that struck the front of the building during a storm. The blaze started in the attic and then spread throughout the building, leaving it a total loss.

"We got there about 3:10 p.m. and the main fire was out in about an hour," McAvoy said. "We were there
