Denver News Anchor Bitten by Dog: 'Having a Baby Hurt More'

The Colorado news anchor who was bitten by a rescued dog live on the air told the Denver Post in her first interview that the first thought she had after the dog bit her was, "I'm bleeding, and it had to be on television."

Kyle Dyer, a veteran morning news anchor for NBC News' Denver affiliate KUSA, was reporting an uplifting story of a dog rescued from a frozen reservoir on Feb. 8.

When Dyer bent down to kiss the dog's nose, the 85-pound Argentine Mastiff named Max turned his head and bit into Dyer's face as his owner and rescuer watched in disbelief.

"It was a fluke, it happened," Dyer told the Denver Post. "It could have been so much worse. Not once was I afraid or scared. Yeah, it hurt, but having a baby hurt more."

Dyer received 70 stitches and had her mouth stitched shut so that she could heal. A plastic surgeon grafted skin from her lower lip to build her a new upper lip, the Denver Post reported.

"We all think we know how to pet a dog, but we don't. You know, I don't, obviously," Dyer said. "By the end of that interview, it was just a fluke. I didn't see anything that I felt threatened [by]. I didn't realize that I was threatening [the dog]. It just happened."

The on-camera bite became a viral sensation, circulated all over the world.

"My niece lives in Lithuania, and it was in the newspaper in her small town in Lithuania. Can you believe that?" Dyer asked incredulously.

Dyer has already undergone two surgeries and is having the remaining stitches taken out this week. In the summer, a doctor will decide whether she needs any more surgery.

She has received an outpouring of support from people everywhere, who have left messages on her Facebook page and sent her cards. Dyer has also gotten some negative messages from people blaming her for the dog's temporary detention.

"People get heated and protective over dogs," she said. "I never felt any ill toward Max."

"The dog went and did his time, as the city says, and I'm glad he's back with his family because that must have been a really hard 24 hours for that family to go through that, so I'm glad they've got their dog back," Dyer said. "It was just an accident."

Dyer said the negativity was a "shame" because, for her, the experience had been oddly positive, and she is looking forward to getting back to work.

"I just keep reading the letters and know that I'm going to heal," she said. "I don't know how quickly, but I will and I'll be better than ever."

I had something like this happen once. Same foolish mistake she made. I still love (most) dogs (I own a couple). But believe me - I've learned from that mistake and I DEFINITELY don't get in the face of any dogs besides my own!

Dogs are living animals, just the same as you and I. With that said, if you don't known the animal, don't invade its territory. I have two boxers, they sound like they will tear you apart if you drive up in the drive, get out and they will greet you most politely. However I do bear scars because I invaded their safe zone, don't go there and all is well, as is with most all dogs.

Yeah, it's stupid. I do all kinds of stupid things to my own but common sense is not to do it to a strange dog.

She couldn't have handled the situation with more class. She's obviously not aware of how dangerous it is to stick your face in the face of a dog that doesn't know you...well, she is now.

But you couldn't ask her to handle it with any more class than that.

David, your response was so well stated. I couldn't have said it better. :)

I agree, but would add that if she had leaned over and lissed my little Rat Terrier, my dog would not only have kissed her back, but said good-bye to me and gone home with her.

No, he actually will remember it for a while. He won't feel guilty for his instincts, but he will remember it, and chances are, he would try to be more peaceful with her next time he sees her if she gives him space and lets him go to her.

From her comments on accepting responsibility, I'll bet she doesn't jump on the "sue crazy bandwagon" and go after the dog's owner. Kudos to her!!!!!!

wow... it's nice to see someone NOT blame the animal and take responsibility for their own actions, even when they don't know what those actions were. It sucks she get half her face bitten off, but she's dealing with it, she's not blaming anyone but herself, and it's cool. I don't think the dog should have been able to do what it did, but sometimes you just can't help it. dogs are like kids and sometimes, they're so quick it's done before you even notice they've moved. I wish you quick healing and appreciate your "what's done is done" attitude. if only more people held the same ideas.

It is such a breath of fresh air to see someone have such a great positive attitude. I have so much respect for people like this. Today it is so easy for people to be negative. It's unfortunately addictive. If you are around negative people then you become negative. It's a shame that there are not more people uplifting and positive spreading that around instead. God Bless those that are.

I APPLAUDE THIS PERSON FOR NOT BLAMING THE DOG AND PUSHING FOR HIM TO BE PUNISHED OR PUT DOWN. HURRAY FOR HER CHALKING THIS UP TO A SIMPLE BUT DEVASTATING ACCIDENT

i love dogs, but i would EVER kiss a dog that doesn't know me. they're animals and their instincts make them do things like this with strangers...common sense. glad she's okay though!

I'd take the dog bite any day. Having a baby would be like crapping out a watermelon. My hat's off to you ladies.. That has to be more pain than I would want to endure...

I feel bad for her. It has to be embarrassing to have this all over the news. I think
she has to be a great person to go thru all this and not have any ill will. I don't blame
the dog. The poor thing had been thru enough and shouldn't have been on the show
to begin with. It was bad judgement all around.
