Girl Who Outsmarted Alleged Kidnapper: 'I Got my Fight From Daddy'

A 9-year-old girl is getting credit for her quick thinking and for speaking up after managing to escape from her alleged kidnapper last week.

Calysta Cordova was reported missing Thursday afternoon by her mother when she didn't come home from school. Authorities believed she was abducted on her walk home and issued an Amber Alert.

"My baby girl always walks through my door at 3:21 p.m. I noticed something was wrong, when she was nine minutes late...I called everyone, I panicked," said Steven Ryno, Calysta's stepfather.

"We must find her, that was the main thing that was kicking through our head. It is getting late, it is getting dark, it is getting cold, and I know my baby is hungry," said Ryno, recounting the incident.

Calysta was found safe Friday at the Circle K convenience store in Colorado Springs, according to ABC News' Denver affiliate KMGH. Colorado Springs police spokeswoman Barbara Miller told KMGH that authorities believe Calysta was in a car with 29-year-old suspect Jose Garcia when the car broke down.

A passerby picked them up and drove them to the Circle K convenience store, police said. There, Calysta ran into the store and asked for a phone, saying she wanted to call her uncle. Instead, she called 911.

When asked how she found the strength to do what she did, Calysta said in an exclusive interview with "Good Morning America," that she "got my fight from Daddy."

Calysta said her father taught her "to stand up for myself."

"She had two black eyes, bruises on her cheek," witness Efrin Villapondo told KMGH. "She was in bad shape. The bruise on her face was enormous."

When Garcia entered the store, Calysta defiantly refused to go anywhere with him, yelling, "I'm not going anywhere with you. I'm waiting for my mom," according to police.

"She looked at me, pointed into my eyes and just said, 'I ain't going nowhere. I'm waiting right here for my momma. I looked at the guy, he looked at me, into my eyes, spun around and just high-tailed it out of there," said Efrin Villapando, a witness.

Garcia took off on foot before police arrived. Calysta was transported to Memorial Hospital to be treated for her injuries.

Garcia was found at a bus stop in downtown Colorado Springs, about 7.5 miles south of the convenience store where they had been dropped off.

KMGH was on-scene when Calysta's mother Stephanie Cordova discovered her daughter had been found safe. As the family shrieked and cried with joy, Cordova took a moment to thank all the family's supporters.

"Thank God. Thank you for everybody who watched, who kept an eye out for my daughter and brought her home," Cordova said, crying. "Thank you for your kindness, for putting yourselves in our shoes and bringing my daughter home."

You go baby girl. I'm so proud of you. Now if we can just get other children to do the same. My mother always taught me that when something is wrong make a scene so others can know about it and come to your aid. This little girl is awesome.
    • debbie 3 months ago
Thats well and good to get other children to do the same.
But the truth is that if his car hadnt broken down, she would not have gotten the chance to do this. He would have driven her to his house, or to some woods, and she would have been another statistic.
How bout teaching parents, to supervise their young children, instead of leaving them to their own devices, wandering around alone? Children of that age should be picked up from school, sorry.....

It is incredible that a man had those instincts in the first place usually they aren't as connected to their children as mothers

Yeah, it is nice to hear this guy say that... real parents have that red flag go up within 10 minutes. And they labeled him "Step Dad" in the story. I am going to change that to "Her Dad".

What's most amazing is that the girl waited for an opportunity rather than tell the stranger who picked them up to take them to the convenience store. Had she told the guy who picked them up instead, this story might have a different outcome. What a smart cookie!
    • yahoo user 3 months ago
Maybe the guy that picked them up knew something wasn't right so he didn't ask questions either. Took them where there were more people, safer.
    • Starr 3 months ago
@yahoo User...you could be right...it could have gotten ugly if the man that gave them the ride would have said something...it was better where there were more people. I am sure the man that gave them the ride noticed the bruising on her face.

STARR N YAHOO USER, WOULDNT YOU BE CURIOUS WHAT HAPPENED TO THE CHILD'S FACE/EYES? EVEN IF U R QUIET COS OF SAFTY, WHY DIDNT HE TURN AROUND ,GET INTO THE STORE ,OR CALL THE COPS? ALOT OF PPL IN THIS COUNTRY JUST " LOVE TO MIND THEIR BUSINESS!" N CRY OR SHOW FAKE CONCERN AFTERWARDS.

God bless her. And Daddy must be feeling proud that she feels that way. Way to go parents! Sounds like she has a lot of inner strength. We need all little girls to feel that way.

Stranger abductions of children should be a death penalty crime. What was he going to do to her?Sell her, rape her, murder her. Then his intentions should cost him his life. PERIOD

My ex tries to molly-coddle my son and make him as non-combative as she can; I always tell him "Listen...people will only do to you what you allow them to do. If you resist, it isn't going to hurt any worse than what'll happen if you just stand there and take it; so fight like hell until either they stop, or you run out of energy!"

This shows how important it is to have a father who loves and looks out for you! Salute to

More parents need to start teaching their kids how to fight back and help themselves. It could save their lives. And as for the #$%$ who think a child can't fight back, just think of all the kids out there learning martial arts and self defense. Believe me, they and their parents are to be commended for teaching their children how to stay safe.

We just had a perv hanging out in front of a Wal Mart checking out all the women. When he found the one he wanted he followed her in, then pulled a gun on her and forced her out of the store.Once he got her outside she started to scream and the perv ran away. They got good video of the #$%$ and should pick him up soon.Be careful and pay attention to your surroundings.

Shelly M how dumb or you Elizabeth Smart and Jaycee Dugaard were victims. They were controled by someone else. They had no choice. Thank God this little girl got picked up by someone whose car broke down and she had the opportunity to help herself. Kudos to her for doing that. But dont minimize other victims . This story could have had a sadder ending if her circumstances had been different. Why are people so MEAN.

The part that most impressed me was she looked at one person in the eye and told her, "I'm not going anywhere." That totally eliminates the bystander effect when the victim/survivor speaks directly to a person.

I was almost abducted at age 19 and was scared, couldn't imagine being 9 and in that situation. What a brave lil mama:-)

Most of these stories don't have such a happy ending. Thankfully this one did. What the kidnapper needs is a vigilante knocking on his door, after he spends his 60 days in jail. Drag the s.o.b. out in a public square, tie him to a tree, cover him with honey, and drop bags of fire ants on his head. I generally don't support the death penalty, but this crime is so heinous, that it would merit it. I guarantee that his plan was to rape and murder that helpless girl.
