In 2010, the average consumer spent $2,505 when eating food away from home, according to the United States Department of Labor.In comparison to 2009, spending fell in 2010 as prices for goods and services increased. However, this has become the second consecutive year that spending has dropped when it comes to eating away from home. The average American spent $2,698 in 2008 and $2,619 in 2009. Nevertheless, consumers continue to enjoy the convenience of eating out.
