He murdered them. Knocked them out with a hatchet and then burned them as he would evidence. Its about as sick as sick gets. Poor kids, excited to see Dad and have to feel that pain. RIP.

I have witnessed again and again the courts and judges turn unprotected children over to abusive, psycho parents in the name of family rights. How sad yet another instance of this happening. Why wasn't the supervised visit in a safe place for those boys and the case worker?

I see the nut didn't fall from the tree!!!!!! His ENTIRE family is screwed up...Now, his nut-sister says he was 'driven' to it....Probably, the same way his pa is a child-porno nut, this WHOLE family is 'messed' up....Let's hear his ma make her excuses!!!!!

I heard that the social worker who took the boys on their final visitation has been gravely traumatized. She probably got to know the boys well. I really feel sorry for her. I would be haunted forever too. But I do believe, that had she made it into Josh Powell's home, she would have been attacked with the hatchet or perhaps become another victim of the explosion. Nothing or no one was going to stand in Josh Powell's way. He was lying in wait. This horrendous act was calculated and evil. My heart goes out to Chuck and Judy Cox the granparents.

RMH you are absolutely correct. His own conscious was going to do him in anyway. He showed signs of being a possessive individual, jealous, domineering and an angry person ... such an unfortunately situation. However, this could have been avoided had the courts not given him visitation rights and the grandparents had a restraining order. This social worker must be having nightmares. So sad :(

Indeed. The social work profession needs to make public the number of social workers who have not only been severly traumatized by what we have faced, but have also been physically attacked, verbally abused, had guns and knives drawn on us...all in trying to do our jobs to the best of our abilities within the confines of state laws and mandates. Some of us have had our licenses suspened and revoked and lost jobs when we chose to go against wacked decisions to do what our conscience said was right to do for our clients.

But this man was bent on destruction, no matter where the supervised visit would have taken place. That type of hellbent determination will find a way to carry out what it has willed.

I hope the courts take this case serious when allowing visitation rights to an individual whether man or woman that has the characteristic of this deranged man, Josh Powell... there are plenty of them out there. The courts need to do more to protect the children and battered spouses for that matter. The social worker must be having nightmares.

EXCELLENT POST! This case proves how dangerous "supervised" visits are. Supervised visits in many states are a farce and this one turned to a tragedy! I am not surprised, when I had "supervised" visits in NY state, for my young daughters , my violent estranged husband was allowed to hire babysitters without any credentials to "supervise"- and take them anywhere he wanted! he quickly won the absolutely unqualified - all amateur!--"Supervisors" over with trips to restaurants, hotel pools etc, and one was eager to testified AGAINST me! He had tried to kill me and set my baby's highchair on fire and hit my older ( 3 year old daughter and been otherwise physically rough with her- drove off drunk with her!, made her undress in front of him (age 4) ) When the girls were "old enough" to report) 3 and 5- and no adverse reports were given by "supervisors" , he was allowed unsupervised visits during which he severely struck my older daughter (then 10) and locked my younger daughter in the car if she cried. He threatened to kill their pets. I called NY police and they said unless he hurt them more severely, he was not breaking the law! My lawyer said there no recourse at that level of abuse- he had to draw blood or maim them! Kids are given to crazy, sadistic parents who then- big surprise- continue to abuse them or even kill them.

This "supervision" should have been at a court appointed place, if at all.
Sad to say, their tragedies prove an important point.
If their deaths are to have any meaning, they CAN be used to save other children by getting the word out on "supervised visitation"--MUCH TOO LAX and DANGEROUS.

I was lucky my children were not killed- but they are seriously psychologically wounded- and now, sad to say, lean toward dating young men who are also abusive, in a classic victim pattern.

      Damage is done.
This poor social worker supervisor was court appointed - not her fault- had she walked in first, it seems obvious he would have killed her also- and yes, she is no doubt having nightmares but why did the court allow this visit at a home that was already suspect for murder and child abuse & pornography?

Child protection in these case does not exist in most states (perhaps in all).

      TIME TO DO SOMETHING!

wow... unreal... sorry for you ordeal... my dad was very abusive and it was hell. My mom did not rest until she got justice and when we were older we protected her. She was a God fearing woman and I believe we were under His wing. Today my dad is dead of his own doing.

To better protect the children family services would need to hire more people. That will never happen since it is government and the government only spends on its cronies.

This dude fooled the entire justice system. He killed his wife, dumped his wife in the trunk(the boys saw this)and he left her in a cave somewhere. Who takes two young kids out camping in cold weather, early in the morning? And then your wife comes up missing. Come on police. Rocket science 101. Then the dude loses a custody case but is granted visits by the kids and a social worker. He locks the worker out of the house, chops on the kids and sets the house on fire. BOOM. Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles could see this dude was crazy. Yall got played justice system. They gotta make a movie out of this one. Titled: DUMB COPS PART 2. Parts 1 and 1A are the Casey Anthony case and the Amanda Knox case. Stay tuned, bound to be more episodes.

They made it easy. I still think ANYONE could and SHOULD have seen there was a murderer there. There were SO many red flags. HOW MANY SIGNS did he need to send? I guess THIS is the sign they needed to do something. WELL....GOOD JOB AUTHORITIES!

Fortunately we still live in a democratic republic where it is not legal to "do something" to someone because there are "signs". Otherwise, many posters on here would be incarcerated.

This is a new journalistic genre it is called the "Titicle". A Titicle is an article that is contained entirely in the title.

NO doubt now that he killed Susan and was certifiably nuts, as is the entire family including his father, it seems. Really sad and tragic end to those children's lives. God Bless them!

If the courts decide that any visits should be supervised, then all visits should be held at the local police station or sheriff's station. When the courts decided that the visits have to be supervised, they come to that conclusion BECAUSE the courts have determined that there just might be a potential for violence or for an abduction. This is what can happen when proper supervision is not conducted that will be able to afford the children evolved the proper amount of protection needed to help protect their young lives.

Again, deepest condolences and prayers to all who knew the mom and sons, and yes even the husband.

Unfortunately, all of us have perfect vision and right answers in hindsight, but rarely when we are in the moment or looking into the future.

Indeed. The social work profession needs to make public the number of social workers who have not only been severly traumatized by what we have faced, but have also been physically attacked, verbally abused, had guns, dogs and knives drawn on us...all in trying to do our jobs to the best of our abilities within the confines of state laws and mandates. Some of us have had our licenses suspened and revoked and lost jobs when we chose to go against wacked decisions to do what our conscience said was right to do for our clients.

But this man was bent on destruction, no matter where the supervised visit would have taken place. That type of hellbent determination will find a way to carry out what it has willed...and all too often it takes innocent people with it.

As sad as this is I know in heart those dear little boys are sitting in the lap of Jesus being loved as consoled. As for the father I'm sure he is experiencing something us women going through menopause call a "hot flash"!

Those poor children. it is no telling what they went through in life with Josh & his father. What a father & grandfather(Josh's Dad) As I said before he should have just taken himself & his father with him to hell. Now we have to pay for attorney for the old man & pay to incarcerate him til he dies. What happened to old fashion ,quick justice hangings, one that doesn't eat ate the taxes payers monies up?

Why are these people all over the TV reveling in their new found attention? My God, this entire family is made up of freaks! We will never know the extent of the dark interactions of all the odd people involved -- and that's probably just as well.

From kcwoman who wrote: "Fortunately we still live in a democratic republic where it is not legal to "do something" to someone because there are "signs". Otherwise, many posters on here would be incarcerated"

kcwoman: this is the truth and where the whole issue of "rights" becomes a mass ball of confusion. Then legislation comes into the mix to try and 'legally' determine just who has what right to do what and when and whose rights are more important. The really sad part is that there will always be a victim who will become doubly victimized becasue of everyone's need to have their rights honored as the most important. How did we get to this point in time? How did we get here?
