Josh Powell Was Victim, His Sister Claims

Josh Powell's sister had once suspected him of murdering his missing wife, but now – despite killing his two sons in a fiery explosion – she believes he had nothing to do with Susan Cox's disappearance.

Alina Powell conceded to ABC News that she was suspicious of her brother when his wife vanished in 2009.

"I was. I had my doubts," she said.

But in the following two years, those doubts had been erased.

"I scrutinized him pretty deeply. I watched him when he would talk, when he would interact with anyone else. I had my doubts," Alina Powell said. But, she said, "I never, ever heard anything that was remotely suspicious in I don't know how many months."

Josh Powell was the sole person of interest in the disappearance of Susan, a label that Alina Powell said tore him apart, leading him to kill himself and his two sons, Charles, 7, and Braden, 5, this past weekend.

She depicted her brother as a victim.

"I think this was the act of somebody who had been so damaged by the lack of due process, so harassed and abused and lied about that he just reached a point of feeling like there was no... I don't know," she said.

The family of Susan Cox have said in the wake of Powell's death that West Valley City, Utah, police had been closing in on arresting Powell for the murder of Cox. They said the children had begun to describe their mother being in the trunk of the car when the father took them on a late night camping trip in freezing rain. That was the night that their mother disappeared.

But Alina Powell, and other members of Powell's family, say the police tormented Powell. They accused the West Valley City police of interfering with the custody battle between Josh and Susan's parents over the couple's two sons. The police department sent a letter to the Washington family court where custody hearings were held, claiming that images found on Josh's computer in 2009 signified danger to the boys if they were left in Josh's care.

"I think he must have just felt that there was only one way left for him to protect his sons, from the pain, from all the emotional and physical pain they've been experiencing," Alina Powell said.

Alina Powell was one of several people to receive a voicemail from her brother just minutes before he blew up his home Sunday with his sons inside. In the voicemail, Josh Powell said good-bye. His alarmed sister called 911, but responders arrived on the scene after the explosion had occurred.

"When I got there I just stopped in the middle of the road. I said it looks like his home exploded and it's just practically gone," she said. "I wake up and I feel like it didn't really happen. It just takes a few minutes for it to sink in."

While some have characterized the murder-suicide as an admission of guilt by Powell, Alina said she still believes her brother was innocent.

"I just miss them all so much. They were my boys. All three of them, they were my boys," she said.

Maybe he was innocent in his wifes disappearance.
But, he ceased being a victim and became a murderer when he hacked his sons with an axe and then blew them up.
So even if he didn't murder his wife, he is still a murderer and not a victim.

Taxpayer, the skin may be destroyed but the bones weren't. Obviously there were marks from the hatchet on the boys' spines and skull.

I like how she said she never saw anything suspicious. Yeah a midnight camping trip in freezing rain with two very young children isn't suspicious at all. Everyone does that right?

      not the first time done.
    • GrandeSkimLatte 3 months ago
On a Sunday night before work. And then forgot what day of the week it was. "not the first time done?" And that makes it normal? Late on a Sunday, you leave with a 2 & a 4 year old on one of the coldest nights in the winter. Returned to find his wife gone. Two very strange things in one day, and the guy never showed any great concern or sadness.

By the way, Taxpayer, if you're going to make a statement like "not the first time done", why don't you back it up with some verifiable examples? I'd be interested to know who HAS done that, as a spur of the moment thing on a Sunday night, without Mom to care for 2 kids under 5.

You put it out there, so give us some examples; names, dates, locations. Who do you know who has done this? Done a lot of camping in my life, with kids, without kids. We never set out from home in the dark of night into freezing temperatures into snow and sleet to "make s'mores and have fun" (which is what Josh Powell told police 2 years ago.) I know a lot of hunters who go out with their kids in all kinds of weather. Still, have never heard of anyone starting after dinner with a 2 & 5 year old. Why don't you regale us with ALL the stories (or even one) of people who have done this.

yea and it wasn't freezing rain, it was snow, and freezing temps--and he supposedly drove a couple hours of out town to go camping, in that kind of weather, and midnite on a sunday when he had to go to work the next day...which he said he "forgot"...lets see, no one in the family or friends ever remembers him going camping at midnite on a sunday in the snow/freezing temps before, he just HAPPENS to do it the night her wife disappears, and just happens not to make it into work the next day...

If the kids were starting to talk and said Mommy was in the trunk, he calculated what his risk was and decided to murder his two sons. This guy is no victim, his story has been so bizarre since the beginning and concludes with murdering his two little boys. If he is the victim then he should have killed himself, but his ultimate act of defiance was to kill his sons and make sure that his wife's family would never have the chance to raise them. A sister's cloudy vision doesn't cut it; he is a murderer.
    • Tuffy 3 months ago
You are absolutely correct. He couldn't stand the thought of his wife's family raising the boys. He is a coldblooded murderer. He took their daughter and grandchildren from them and also the knowledge of the location of Susan's remains. They can't even give her a proper burial. He's not the victim here.

dont know his thoughts-only you know all he was thinking in his fuzzy thinking.
    • Tuffy 3 months ago
Taxpayer - are you his best friend or what? There's no question he murdered his sons. I don't know what he was thinking and I really don't care. The fact is he killed his kids. And their mother.

Then the sister should just shut her mouth until she has control of her senses, which means that she finally accepts the FACT THAT HER BROTHER IS A MURDERER and was BEFORE HE MURDERED HIS CHILDREN.

What part of "their mother being in the trunk of the car when the father took them on a late night camping trip in freezing rain." did she miss? I know EVERYONE keeps their wife in the trunk when they go camping in the freezing rain in the middle of the night, but it does sound a little suspicious...

The boys were with their grandparents and were safe and sound. Powell knew that his freedom was going to be short-lived as the police put their case together and were finally going to arrest them. He would not divulge to the police where he took the boys camping on that fateful night and he was not helpful and less than truthful. His conscious finally got to him, but unfortunately, in his demented mental state, he took the boys with him. What a coward!!!!
  • Opinionated  •  3 months ago
How could you even slightly believe he is a victim? He, in cold blood, planned and plotted this murder of his children. No person in their right mind takes very small children camping at midnight in 14 degree weather. He killed his wife, carried her body in the trunk and put her in a cave somewhere. The boys knew it. They no longer wanted to see their father. He was no victim. He was a sick, selfish individual who should have killed himself but let the children live.

Why not just say you loved your brother because he was your brother?? We sometimes love people who do bad things. Stop making excuses for his actions and blaming others. Wether he killed his wife is not been proven under the law but his acitons and circumstantial evidence says he did it. However...HE KILLED HIS TWO SONS!! Those two boys will never grow up, be married, have a family........ Think of that when you want to call your brother a victim.
  • Tuffy  •  3 months ago
So, his sister was suspicious before but now that he murdered his sons he's a victim? He's a victim?? This just proves his guilt in the disappearance of his wife. The victims here are Susan and her sons. He was a coward and a murderer.

This shouldn't have been published. She's from a mess of a family. Dad's a pervert (clild porn viewer), and her brother is a selfish, narcissistic, manipulative piece of %$#& murderer who took a hatchet to the sons he supposedly cared so much about. She's as sick and dysfunctional as they are.
  • htown p  •  3 months ago
While I can understand the love for a family member I cant understand out right lying about him being an innocent victim. He killed those kids because they were going to rat his sorry butt out and he would be given the death sentence anyway. Why didnt he just blow himself and his father up and let those two innocent boys live with their maternal grandparents. Because he is a selfish murderer!
  • Carol  •  3 months ago
Sorry sis, but my sympathy meter is on negative now. There were many was to deal with his situation, and killing your own children was not one of them.
  • heather  •  Seattle, Washington  •  3 months ago
Taxpayer needs to get an education, learn how to type, form a sentence and play a little more connect the dots. Everyone knows that his aunt is a victim because she loved the little boys, but we all know that Josh was not a victim. His story of going camping at 1 in the morning in a Utah blizzard was so transparent, of course no one believed it. And it just happened to be the same night that his wife dissappears. Get a grip. Then he waits until his kids start talking about that night and he is ordered to take an psychosexual evaluation while hooked up to a lie detector, and then he methodically plans how to end their lives. That is the act of a sick, selfish murderer who does not know how to love, only how to own people and things. He sounded like he was more concerned about settling his affairs than he was about the fact that he was going to take the lives of his two children. But, then again, they say once you have killed one person it becomes easier to kill again. He took the life of the woman he supposedly loved, covered up her murder in front of the kids and when he knew that he no longer had control over who the kids interacted with and talked to and that they were starting to talk about it...he ended it. It was cold calculated murder and Josh Powell was no victim...he was a killer. I feel sorry for the families, but they need to get a grip and realise that if there was something going on in the Powell family that caused that kind of psycosis, they need to talk about it. I mean, the head of the Powell family is in jail for child porn and voyeurism. You can't tell me that someone in the family did not know about that. Those boys lived in the same house with that pervert for how long? The family needs to fess up and tell all the secrets so that this whole mess can be cleaned up before someone else gets hurt. It is a sad day, no matter how much you love your brother, who you were estranged from and at one time believed killed your sister-in-law, when you claim that a man that can hack his children with an axe and then burn them alive is some kind of victim. Yes he might have been sick, yes he might have been cornered by circumstances that he created. But he was NO VICTIM.
