Josh Powell's Computer Had Incest Images, Police

Josh Powell's computer had images of animated incestuous sex on it, authorities have revealed.

The images were realistic computer-generated depictions of parent-child sex, Detective Ed Troyer of the Pierce County Sheriff's Department told the Associated Press.

The computer was taken by police following the 2009 disappearance of Powell's wife, Susan Cox, but the images were brought up for the first time publicly in a court custody hearing last week.

The court ruled that because of images that were "specifically related to the children's welfare" on his computer, Powell would have to undergo an extensive psychosexual evaluation, polygraph test, and counseling before he could regain custody of the boys. The court would not disclose what the images depicted.

Following the custody hearing, Powell told ABC News that he had no idea what kind of images the West Valley City, Utah, police had found on his computer that would factor into a custody hearing. He said he could not remember having any inappropriate images on his computer, and said it was possible someone had emailed the images to him.

But four days later, Powell killed his children -- Charles, 7, and Braden, 5 -- attacking them with a hatchet and then blowing up his house with himself and his sons inside.

Steve Downing, the attorney representing Cox's parents, Chuck and Judy Cox, said if he had known the nature of the images that were found on Powell's computer, he would have asked the court to change the terms of custody.

Powell originally lost custody when his father, Steve Powell, with whom Powell and his sons lived, was arrested on child pornography and voyeurism charges in September.

He had moved in with his father after his wife Susan Cox disappeared. Powell was the lone "person of interest" in her disappearance.

The long drama surrounding Powell came to an explosive end Sunday during a supervised visit at his home. Powell welcomed the children inside and locked out the social worker.

He could be heard telling son Charlie he had "a big surprise" for him. The social worker then heard Braden cry out. And minutes later the house exploded.

Powell sent emails and left voicemails for relatives and friends minutes before the explosion saying he could not live without his boys any longer and had to protect them.

New information emerged today on how the supervised visits had been switched from public places to Powell's home.

"We had been having supervised visits, and there were no concerns raised during those visits," Sharon Gilbert, an official at the Department of Social and Health Services, told ABC News' 20/20.

Because of Powell's notoriety in the case about his missing wife, officials decided to move the visits to his home.

"Josh Powell was recognizable, as were the children. And that could also be disruptive to visits that are occurring with other families," Gilbert said of the decision.

Both Gilbert and social worker Elizabeth Griffin-Hall said they did not see any warning signs that Powell would eventually lure the children into his home to kill them.

"How this happened is that Josh Powell was really, really evil, Griffin-Hall said. "I couldn't have stopped him."

Joseph Rhee contributed to this report.

Agreed. Why is it creeps like this always kill their families, then themselves?
    • Gisela 3 months ago
What this monster really wanted was to keep the kids quiet about what they actually saw, and I say that because it might be that as the children grew and matured, their minds were beginning to process what they saw happen to their mother. And, let's call a spade a spade: why do we keep calling people like this sick? The correct term is evil, evil, evil.

Such a horrible thing today, that children are being killed by their own parents. I wouldn't give the police any credibility on here. I listened to Good Morning American this morning and heard the poor child social worker's call to 911. They actually argued that they would send someone out when they got around to it. They said "they only sent officers out when someone's life depended on it." The social worker couldn't get them to understand that she had accessed the situation, that the children were in grave danger, and that she had the authority to call them....even if she suspected a problem. The 911 operator argued with her a full 10 minutes refusing to send an officer out immediately...and then only responded to send officers out when the house exploded.

In our bankrupt city there aren't enough police to handle major crimes committed let alone answer our calls when we see something suspicious. And my city is considered safe! I no longer feel safe in my neighborhood, and am thinking about getting a gun to protect myself in case of another break-in or strangers hanging out on the street outside my home.

Asha the bottom line is that the police in most larger cities are woefully understaffed and overworked. It is sad and unfortunate but the only way to really feel safe even in your own home is by being able to use every self defense method available to protect you and your family, including keeping a gun in your house to defend yourself. I would however strongly suggest you take a class in handgun safety before you make a purchase and there are also a lot of places where they will teach you what is legal and not legal to do in the event of a home invasion and when it is appropriate to use your gun to defend yourself. If you look on the internet for concealed carry classes, they can give you all the info you need. Every American should be able to feel safe in their own home no matter where you live. I hope and pray that you never have to use a gun to defend yourself or your family but it may help give you peace of mind and make you feel safer than you do now. Good luck with whatever you decide to do and stay safe!

Sounds like the wife found some of these things out about him, or saw him sexually abusing his children....so he murdered her....there is a special level of hell for pedophiles, especially the ones who use their own children...

I wish there were, but there is no such place. No heaven. No hell. No Satan. No god. If there were a hell and a special place for pedophiles, it would already be packed to capacity with Catholic priests.

I could not agree more!! His father is a filthy #$%$ of the earth and is does not surprise me that the son is too. If there is such a place as hell, I hope you are right that there is a special place just for these type of cretins.

I agree with Max - views like Hell may make us feel better but it is allowing Hate into our hearts. Let us stop the hating - yes this man was evil but wishing torture on anyone is wrong. I am Hindu - no Hell or Heaven in Hinduism - God Rama does not Torture. Period. God Rama does not abuse, hit, whip, sodomize, rape, use the electric prod, break legs, water board, humiliate

You might not be able to stop someone else from doing this in the future but you don't have to make it easy for them. NO MORE AT HOME VISITS WITH MURDER SUSPECTS!!!
    • Zeon 3 months ago
The Constitution prevents this. You've heard of innocent until PROVEN guilty. If suspicion were enough, we'd all be in jail.
    • Jennilynn A. 3 months ago
Exactly. At the least they can provide police protection for the children of violent criminals and suspects.

Who cares about him being known and using that as an excuse to have home visits. This NEVER would have happened if the visits were still done elsewhere. SO sad. :(

    • laskaa 3 months ago
the law enforcement dropped the ball cause they let josh powell move to washington then, they searched his house. once they realized how sick he was they tried to get the kids out. then washigton dropped the ball. now the kids are dead.

Unfortunately it sounds like it. I ache for the grandparents of these little boys
    • Pamela 3 months ago
Nobody dropped the ball. He was not found guilty of anything yet. Supervision is the only way to walk that fine line between taking away a person's parental rights and protecting the children. NO ONE could have predicted this. If he lost custody and/or had NO visitation and it turned out he had nothing to do with the disappearance of the wife or his father's pedophilia you would have crucified the courts for separating the children from their only remaining parent.

No warning signs? And he was the lone suspect in the disappearance of their mother? Um, I would call that a warning sign that the man might be violent towards a family member.

At the risk of being a gossiping slimeball, I bet he was molesting his kids - like father, like son - and his wife found out. She then disappeared.

Isn't it odd that this evidence just recently came out of Utah? The Sherriff investigating this would have taken this right to the media, just like the dog & pony show for the media last year out in the Nevada desert. I am wondering about the timeline, when was this added to the computer. I am leary of computerize evidence since my neighbor spent six weeks in jail because of something that his now ex-wife did in thier divorse. Always lock your computer,

As a Christian I don't wish hell on anybody because we can't imagine the suffering that goes on there for eternity but I have no doubt that he has a special place reserved for him there. In the same sense I know those children are in the arms of their Maker. May God bless the family who remains...

Sounds like he was just biding his time until he could have the visits in his home again so he could carry out this horrid plan of his. What makes me even more sick is that all the people who called 911 and the other authorities got dismissed. They KNEW something was wrong and no one took them seriously. What a sad end.
