Matthew Dowd: Susan G. Komen-Planned Parenthood Debate Shows 'Poisonous Part of Democracy'

ABC

ABC News political analyst Matthew Dowd said that the debate this week over funding between the Susan G. Komen Foundation and Planned Parenthood shows the "corrupt nature that's happened in politics" is now impacting private groups.

"This is a corrupt, poisonous part of democracy at work," Dowd said on the "This Week" roundtable of the backlash this week when the Susan G. Komen Foundation announced it was removing funding for mammogram screenings from Planned Parenthood - before reversing course after a vocal outcry.

"A private foundation can give and dispense money any way it wants," Dowd added. "I think foundations should be able to make a decision, and if Planned Parenthood wants to go out and raise the money" they lost from the Komen Foundation, they can do so.

AOL Huffington Post Media president Arianna Huffington said the debate showed "social media at work" as supporters of Planned Parenthood galvanized support online.

"This was about women's health. This was an attempt to politicize it," Huffington said. "So the attempt to politicize this issue backfired, and people said this is not a left-right issue."

George Will disputed that idea, saying "This is not about women's health. This is about providing 300,000 abortions a year. Planned Parenthood cleverly cast this to say we are in the mammogram business. They're not in the mammogram business."

"All these people describing themselves as pro-choice said it is illegitimate to choose not to be involved in abortion," Will added.

Will said the Obama administration's requirement for Catholic hospitals and other institutions to provide insurance policies that cover contraception services was a greater threat.

Catholic churches protested that requirement at Sunday services last week, reading letters written by church leaders saying the policy infringed on religious freedom.

"On the political side, in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Ohio, particularly, there are lots of blue-collar Catholics who hear this as more bullying," Will said.

Dowd, who serves on the board of a Catholic hospital in Austin, Texas, agreed that it was an issue of government overreach.

"I think people that run these institutions and are in these services think…why is the federal government doing this, when we're providing all this care," Dowd said. "Why is big government getting involved in our business, which we know what to do?"

"It's a stunning display of irony when you look at all of this," added conservative radio host Dana Loesch. "For instance, Komen is excoriated over their choice - the private charity to do what they want with their money. And here you have the government now saying that you don't have a choice to be able to practice your religious liberty and these institutions have to comply with this particular mandate that goes against their freedom and liberty."

But Huffington said it was about making contraception available to those who work at Catholic institutions, including non-Catholics who do not oppose contraception.

"The churches are not going to be affected," Huffington said. "We're talking about Catholic hospitals that employ a lot of non-Catholics."

Wow - for so many intelligent people, there is an amazing lack of common sense on display in this article. SGK decided to discontinue donating to PP. There was a groundswell of people who made it very clear that they did strongly disagreed with the new SGK positionk to the point of refusing any future association with, or dopnations to, SGK. Part of that groundswell was a siginificant increase in other donations to PP. There was another groundswell, albeiot significantly smaller, of people expressing support for the new position. In the end, SGK decided that better part of valor was to return to supporting PP.

Guess what? All of this is part of the process in a free society. SGK can do what it wants with its money (within the bounds of the law and its announced lans when rasing the bucks). People are free to react to this, pro or con - it's called freedom of speech. PP can (and did) launch a PR campaing to call attention to SGK's decision. That is also called freedom of speech.

No one put gun to the SGK leadership to demand they reverse course. They saw which way the wind was blowing, decided that their new course was a self-inflicted wound, and backed down.

None of this is the least bit complicated. Nor is it the least bit "poisonous." It is part and parcel of living in a society where people can express their opinions. Even the talking heads in this article - they are entitled to their opinions, and I am entitled to think they missed the point completely.

Richard, I wish you had been on the program with them to say that!

As I am entitled to say that when you face your maker and you will face your maker, you will answer for this also.
Are you going to be surprised........................ :-)

I re-read your post. Please tell me all about the "common sense" of murder. Save the life of women who speak for themselves. Murder those who can't speak for themselves, but would surely have an opinion about their health too.

This "private institution" gets "their money" from contributions, and the contributors SPOKE last week!
  • No One You Know  •  3 months ago
SGK aren't the only one's with a choice - potential donors and supporters also have a choice - to voice their disagreement or support over that decision, which both sides did. I don't see anything poisonous or corrupting about it. Nobody forced SGK to reverse their decision - they decided that it was in their best interests. This is all "let the free market decide" stuff conservative usually love....

26 senators came crying for planned parenthood and put pressure on SKG. They should have the right to do what they want with their money.

It's our money (the donors) not THEIRS.
  • ICEMAN  •  3 months ago
Komen is perfectly entitled to dispense their money as they see fit. But the people who provide that money to Komen are also perfectly entitled to stop providing it if they disagree with Komen's policies. If these idiots can't understand that, they shouldn't be spewing their garbage on television or anywhere else.
    • Franky 3 months ago
But they WERE giving money to PP. Why did they change their minds after all these years? Political pressure from Anti-Choice groups. They caved into them. So why shouldn't PP push back? It's Komen's that's at fault. If they're free to give their money to whoever they want, why did they cave to these anti-choice groups? THOSE groups certainly didn't think Komen's was free to give to whoever they wanted and wanted them to stop giving to PP.
    • BryanT 3 months ago
Iceman, George Will isn't intelligent enough to understand that.
    • Jovina 3 months ago
They hired a new VP, Karen Handl. They knew when they hired her that she was anti-Choice. That's why she was hired. This is absolutely wonderful, because everyone now knows this one secret. More to follow. Yes!!!

"Why is big government getting involved in our business, which we know what to do?"

Answer: you are given a tax exemption by said federal government that allows you to keep millions of dollars each year. Don't want them involved? Go private and pay taxes.

Go ahead, be smug, but ever since the Catholic hospital near here shut down its maternity wing, the two nearest hospitals have been flooded and overrun with deliveries they don't have room for. The worst part is that the additional clientele are largely low-income, uninsured, and often high-risk.
    • Sunshine 3 months ago
Once I heard that the hospital that I was born at (a Catholic hospital) excommunicated and fired the nun who allowed an EMERGENCY abortion to save the life of a mother, then I knew that Catholic hospitals could care less about adult women dying, and only care about preserving a fetus and killing its host. So I would never choose to use their services, being an adult woman.

      could NOT care less

What media crud. "A private foundation can give money anyway it sees fit" well guess what Dowt/Will I can deside how and if I want to give to that foundation! Save me the right wing crap that it is some how not democracy what I deside to do! I am just as tired of the right wing media as I am the left wing, always crying that the sky is going to fall in and the world as we know it is coming to an end if their agendas are not met. Down side of the whole mess -Komen showed me they were a bucket of poo, plus side I will be saving several hundred a year. I am sick and tired that everything in our nation is some how a right or left thing. Komen hired a POS that pushed her personal agenda, This is still a democracy, I will not be writing any more checks, sponcering any more walks or buying any more yoplait yogart untill they take responsibility for their actions, now there is something that never happens very often in our nation any longer. Condisering all the issues facing our nation I find it disusting that here comes the standard right wing social issues crap in an atempt to continue to divide the nation. Fix the tax code!, Where are the jobs? Cut expend/raise revenue, 2 for 1, Do the peoples business not the multi-national corperations for a change. Oh one last thing repub trash STOP telling me how to spend my money. You are no better at it than the demos!

Problem is: We, in the USA, have NEVER lived in a Democracy. The fact you think we do just goes to show how bad the education system in the USA has become.
    • Jim 3 months ago
You are both a liar and a #$%$ We live in a Democratic Republic. I am well aware of our system of government, unlike your generation, its inter workings were still taught in school back in the day. 30 years in uniform furthered the education. Shame my service and that of my brothers also gave/gives idiots the freedom to make dumb aaa coments.

What a load of crap..how is a CHARITY, that enjoys a "charity" status of not paying taxes; and who takes in millions of dollars raised by innocent people, a "private foundation"?? It is a CHARITY!! It has to be accountable for how it spends its money! It needs to STAY OUT OF POLITICS!!!
  • jess  •  3 months ago
They are a privte charity working with donations...They have to represent what their donors want or there donors will go elsewhere. The donors said "Support Planned Parenthood" probably because it is an amazing organization which prevents more abortions, through education and birth control, than it has ever performed. They also provide cancer screening, STD screenings, and breast exams. I know this because they are who I will always choose for my Ob,Gyn care.

Gov't rules about health insurance are good for us all. If Komen wants to brand itself as a right wing anti abortion group, then it can. They won't get my money, in that case, but its their right.
  • A Yahoo User  •  3 months ago
When Komen boycotts Planned Parenthood, that's free enterprise.
When donors boycott Komen, that's subversion.
How dare the little people throw the weight of their money around? That is the exclusive prerogative of the rich!
Clearly, democracy is dangerous. The natives are getting restless and must be suppressed.
  • David  •  Sugar Land, Texas  •  3 months ago
People should know the politics of the decision makers at SGK so that they will know something about the likely decision process SGK uses to pick which charities they support beyond the bank accounts of their executives.
  • A Yahoo User  •  3 months ago
When you and I choose how to spend our money, that's an insidious threat to democracy. But when a rich concern chooses how to spend its money, that's sacrosanct free enterprise.
  • Boomer  •  3 months ago
Komen will sputter on for awhile, but they have been badly damaged by this, even having some affiliates angry with them. They may very well not recover from this bone-headed stunt, that has everyone, on both sides, angry with them.
  • Toll_Free  •  Bakersfield, California  •  3 months ago
Dowd doesn't seem to realize that we don't live in a Democracy, we live in a representative republic.
Big difference, and the lack of him respecting the difference shows in his voting record.
  • Diogenes the Dawg  •  3 months ago
The poisonous part of American democracy is how the radical Republican extremists have been trying to win their culture war at the expense of women's rights. Every woman should have the right to decide what her contraceptive options should be. The extremists are all about keeping government out of people's lives except when it comes to vaginas.

I have to imagine more non-profit "scandals" will follow. In a tight economy, people start paying more attention to the flow of $$ and get more vocal about how and where it's spent.
  • TP  •  Columbus, Ohio  •  3 months ago
One's choice to practice their religion is still intact! If anyone wants to use federal money they have to abide by the laws of the country--offering contraception is one part of that. It does not stop anyone from practicing their religious belief. If one wants to pick and choose what regulation/law they want to follow, then don't ask the federal government for any funds! SIMPLE!
  • A Yahoo User  •  3 months ago
Democracy apparently means that only a tiny elite of private interests may choose to boycott. If the larger number of common people chooses to boycott, then that is anti-democratic. Pure Orwellian Newspeak.
  • Flip  •  3 months ago
Not a penny to SGK in the future!.. Not a penny!...There are too many legit women's charities to give to out there ..dont give your donations to whats really a right wing anti-abortion agency.
