Conrad Murray Cuffed, Sentenced to Four Years

Michael Jackson's doctor, Conrad Murray, was sentenced to four years in prison today for negligence that prosecutors said led to the pop icon's death in June of 2009.

Jackson's parents and siblings Jermaine, LaToya and Randy were present at today's sentencing, but did not speak, instead allowing family friend and attorney Brian Panish to read a statement on behalf of the Jackson's three children and family.

In the statement, Michael Jackson's children told the Los Angeles court that they lost their "father, best friend, and playmate" when the singer died, but stressed they were not seeking "revenge".

The statement asked the judge to "impose a sentence that reminds physicians they cannot sell their services to the highest bidder."

"As Michael's parents, we never imagined we would live to witness his passing," Panish read, on behalf of the singer's parents Katherine and Joe Jackson. "There is no way to describe the loss of our beloved brother, son, father and friend."

Judge Michael Pastor began the proceeding by rejecting a motion by Dr. Conrad Murray that cameras be evicted from the courtroom during his sentencing.

The district attorney asked for the maximum sentence of four years as well as $100 million -- the singer's projected earnings from the 50-show "This Is It" tour -- payable to the Jackson estate. The prosecution also asked Murray to pay $1.8 million in costs associated with Jackson's memorial service and funeral.

Lawyers for Murray, who has no previous criminal record, will ask that he received a minimum sentence of probation.

Prosecutors painted Murray as a callous physician who knew he was doing wrong by administering the powerful sedative propofol to Jackson, and then took pains to hide the drug when Jackson died.

"The defendant [Murray] acted as a drug dealer and completely corrupted the trust necessary in a proper doctor-patient relationship," a prosecution memo stated.

Murray's attorneys filed a 45-page memo asking that the judge "impose a sentence of probation with substantial community service," taking into account that the doctor has no criminal record, will most likely never practice medicine again and has already been publicly disgraced.

The defense memo highlighted Murray's humble beginnings in Trinidad and stressed his dedication to the medical profession and his love for his family, including his seven children, which has been "strained close to the breaking point." Along with it, the defense provided 56 pages of letters from Murray's former patients, family members and ministers.

The doctor was found responsible for the pop singer's death on June 25, 2009, after he had injected Jackson with propofol, a sedative Jackson had requested to help him sleep during his grueling rehearsals for an upcoming summer 50-show tour.

Lisa Franklin, who was a juror, told Good Morning America that it was clear Murray did not having the necessary safeguards in place when things went wrong.

"The three biggest things for us were the 911 call, not calling 911. That was a big issue, and not having the medical equipment in the room to put somebody under sedation and leaving the room," Franklin said.

"I told them to be prepared for probation," Jackson family attorney Brian Oxman told ABCNews.com before the sentence was handed down.

Brain Oxman, the Jackson family attorney, said the clan has experienced a "whole mixture of terrible emotions." Originally, the family, including matriarch Katherine Jackson, wanted the book thrown at Murray. Now, post-conviction, Katherine and daughter La Toya are saying, "It doesn't change anything," Oxman said.

"He's been serving his sentence since June 25, and it's more powerful than anything the judge can do to him," said Oxman, who first met Murray in UCLA's emergency room where doctors tried but failed to revive Jackson. "I saw a man who's life completely flashed before him. I don't see him as a cold, calculating killer. He did some horribly dumb things."

Lisa..i disagree with you..about when it's our time to die..aborted babies..its not their time..people who die differnt deaths due to not taking care of themselves..and drunk driving deaths..not their time. Michael..would have eventually died yes..but any doctors responsiblity is to do no harm..and try with in all means to save the patients life. Do you know the Jackson family personally to accuse them of being money hungry? LIsa..have you ever been involved in a domestic situation..where there is any cruelty of any kind?

Nothing like taking advantage of the publicity; no wonder TV cameras should not be allowed in the courtroom. It's time for the bar association to step in and get rid of this showboating judge!!!

So, the headline says "Coonrad Murray Cuffed" He left the courtroom without handcuffs on today at sentencing or was I watching someone else.?.?

"Lawyers for Murray, who has no previous criminal record, will ask that he received a minimum sentence of probation." WTH is this sentence? How can they "will ask" after they've already asked it? How about the "will ask that he recieved." English please.

"Lisa Franklin, who was a juror, told Good Morning America that it was clear Murray did not having the necessary safeguards in place when things went wrong." Really? "did not having", Really?

How do these writers and editors keeps their jobs?

The Jackson family will never accept the fact that the person who caused Michael's death was Michael Jackson . He'd been dancing with the devil propofol for a long time and the only doctor left who would agree to its administration was an incompetent cardiologist . Michael did it to himself ; it's amazing that he cheated death as long as he did .

Yeah, that's why Mike left his brothers; Janet said, I'm not going to pull your coat tale when Mike wanted her to do a video w/him...that statement wasn't necessary.

What a f'ing crock! Now if this was someone rich and famous, he would be in jail for 6 minutes, because we all know how overcrowded it is...at least, it is overcrowded when it is Lohan's or Hilton's turn. But Murray, who probably followed the great Michael Jackson's orders, will do the entire time. And how sad that the children lost a playmate and a buddy, not a FATHER! And now this Jackson family wants money also...too bad they were not concerned enough about their son when he was alive to get him the help he so seriously needed. Greed, greed, suck --- greed!

What is it with these judges in California who want their 15 minutes of fame when a trial is televised. I didn't think Judge Pastor was ever going to shut up. I don't disagree that Dr. Murray is guilty or that he didn't deserve his punishment but the judge had to go into a dissertation on everything before he got to the sentence part.

I am a firm believer that God is the final judge. Whatever Michael Jackson did behind closed doors he had to answer to God on judgement day. We are not the ones to judge. He was an inspiration to lot's of people whether we liked him or not. Even if Michael asked for the drugs it was Murray's ehtical obligation to say no. They are both to blame for what happened. Some of you people on here need t oput yourselves in the shoes of those children who have lost their dad no matter how you feel about the man he was just dad to them. Grow up IDIOTS!!!!

All doctors should pay attention to this and be ready to answer for the patients (that give their trust) they kill. By some accounts the medical community is the leading cause of death in the United States. The California Medical Board is very reluctant to punish these doctors in any way

Why does no one present the point of view indicating that Michael himself was a big part of what happened. He chose his lifestyle, it wracked his brain, trying to cope he bought a physician to administer his drugs instead of going down to street corner like so many with lesser means.

The Dr is another, but just a part of what happened.....

Dr. Murray does not deserve this. M.J. sought out drugs and people who would give them to him. Michael killed Michael.
