Obama Blinks on Contraception Rule

Seeking to quell a political uproar over religious liberty and contraception, President Obama announced today that religious-affiliated institutions will not be mandated to cover birth control for their employees after all.

"Religious organizations won't have to pay for these services and no religious institution will have to provide these services directly," the president announced from the White House briefing room. "Let me repeat: These employers will not have to pay for or provide contraceptive services, but women who work at these institutions will have access to free contraceptive services just like other women."

Insurance companies will instead be directly responsible for providing free contraception and covering the cost.

"Religious organizations won't have to pay for these services and no religious institution will have to provide these services directly," Obama said.

The president's abrupt shift is intended to calm the firestorm surrounding the administration's recent ruling to require most employers, including Catholic hospitals and charities, to offer health insurance that fully covers contraception and satisfy both sides of the explosive debate.

After the initial ruling was met with outrage from Republicans on Capitol Hill and on the campaign trail, the president urged politicians today not to use this issue as a "political football."

"I understand some folks in Washington may want to treat this as another political wedge issue, but it shouldn't be. I certainly never saw it that way," Obama said. "This is an issue where people of good will, on both sides of the debate, have been sorting though some complicated issues to find a solution for everyone."

Under the new policy, women will still get guaranteed access to contraception without a co-pay regardless of where they work "without co-pays and without hassles," he said.

If a woman works for an employer that objects to providing contraception because of its religious beliefs, the insurance company will step in and offer birth control free of charge.

The president made clear that the "accommodation" should not be seen as his backing off his commitment to providing preventative care.

"Women will still have access to free preventive care that includes contraceptive services, no matter where they work. That core principle remains," he said.

"We live in a pluralistic society where we're not going to agree on every single issue or share every belief. That doesn't mean that we have to choose between individual liberty and basic fairness for all Americans. We are unique among nations for having been founded upon both these principles, and our obligation as citizens is to carry them forward. I have complete faith that we can do that," he added.

Both sides of the debate have reacted positively to the president's revised plan.

The president of the Catholic Health Association said she is "pleased" with the revised policy. "The framework developed has responded to the issues we identified that needed to be fixed," Carol Keehan said in a written statement before the president's official announcement.

"We are pleased and grateful that the religious liberty and conscience protection needs of so many ministries that serve our country were appreciated enough that an early resolution of this issue was accomplished."

Planned Parenthood also supported the president's decision. "In the face of a misleading and outrageous assault on women's health, the Obama administration has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring all women will have access to birth control coverage, with no costly co-pays, no additional hurdles, and no matter where they work," Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards said in a written statement before the announcement.

"We believe the compliance mechanism does not compromise a woman's ability to access these critical birth control benefits."

I find it amazing that voices are so shrill about inane topics like this yet when the government passes laws like the Patriot Act and laws that allow U.S. Citizens to be detained without trial the country is silent.

It is because tea baggers are maroons! If it isn't God or Guns, or Women, they just go back to WalMart for the next crappy thing to buy.

Yet Pookie your supporting Obama who just allowed more laws that restrict our freedom even further. I hope you had a lot of outcry over that, I know I did. That, and the lack of any follow through in just about any of Obama's promises.

Doubt I will vote Republic either, I will most likely vote for whatever candidate I think believes in an America that doesn't blindly increase the budget, seeks compromise, and doesn't past laws that restrict our freedom more than the Patriot act did.

Methinks PP and the makers of these contraceptives are very much in bed with Mr. Obama and his staff. Only half joking. Seriously though, WHY are female contraceptives SO IMPORTANT of a drug to make them "free" for all women who need them? Are condoms free? Are male contraceptives free? This is an outrage and an injustice to men everywhere except the ones getting all the action from the ladies hopped up on these things without a care or a worry about consequences.

You know it takes a woman to get pregnant, right?? And you can get free condoms, you just have to go to the clinic.

To add to what Croc_and_roll said, it's important because the cost to society is greatly lowered if a woman can prevent unwanted pregnancies free of charge. Even married women do not want to be pregnant all the time. It's much cheaper to society as a whole to prevent unwanted pregnancies in the first place than to pay for the unwanted children later.

He didn't blink. He's still going against the CONSTITUTION by FORCING private companies(Insurance Companies) to provide these services!
    • Somebody 3 months ago
And don't forget, a public insurance company was offered but Repubs threw a fit. So now the private companies will have to start providing what is needed or will end up out of business for not covering the medical needs they are paid to cover!

Somebody, why don't you stop making a fool of yourself?
    • Toney 3 months ago
Hey 'somebody' - nowhere in the Constitution is the government allowed to make or set-up a public insurance company. Stick that in your liberal pea-sized brain and smoke it like you do everthing else for your mental health. Maybe you ought to read it at least once in your pathetic life.

The word you are looking for is "compromise", something that is seriously lacking in our overly partisan political system. He managed to satisfy the Catholic church and Planned Parenthood at the same time, I say that is quite an accomplishment.

@Casi- He is not going to get my praise for mandating something unconstitutional and then compromising by mandating something also unconstitutional. He does not have the authority to tell a Church or an insurance company what they have to buy, what they have to give away, what they can charge for a product. Last I checked this is still a 3 branch government based on a constitution. I, for one, like living in a free country...well, what is left of it anyway.

You pay for the dress, the dinner out for the night, why cant you pay for the pill, condom, ect... Just plain assanine! I am a woman and I think this is just stupid.

you could just say thank you, idiot.

It's not just single women that don't want to get pregnant. Most married women aren't interested in being knocked up all the time. If the insurance company provided the pills free of charge, I know of several women just off the top of my head who would benefit from this change including myself. While I do pay for my own pills, it's still a 50 dollar copay every month. That 50 dollars could go towards other things that my family needs which, at the moment, is not another kid. I think this change is a good compromise.

Why should your BOSS pay for you to be sexual responsible? Anyone, of any income can walk into any clinic and be handed birthcontrol in multiple forms for free without question, you dont HAVE to pay for it.

"Nothing to see here folks, move along." Yes, I'm sure Obama and the MSM would love to see this swept under the rug quickly: it's been an absolute political disaster for him. But come on. Nothing has really changed. Insurance companies are going to pass on the cost of contraception to their customers, including religious organizations, in the form of higher premiums. So essentially, Catholics organizations are still being forced to pay for something that is expressly against their religion. The liberal Catholic Health Association notwithstanding, most Catholics see this "accomodation" for the shell game it is.

And why does he believe he has the authority to order private companies to provide anything for free? I am confused here, did I fall asleep sometime and wake up under a dictatorship, or was he crowned king and I missed it?

as to the comment by Marc the patriot act was enacted to preserve our freedoms by giving the government a weapon against terrorists and to enable the government to act quickly for the defense of OUR freedom not worrying about the freedom of the terrorists ... while Obama is slowly but surely taking religious freedoms away by imposing the government onto the people and having the government control more of our lives HE IS THE BIGGEST THREAT TO AMERICA THAT WE HAVE HAD ELECTED IN OUR COUNTRY IN A LONG TIME he needs to be shown in NOVEMBER THAT WE THE PEOPLE STILL VALUE OUR FREEDOMS WHETHER RELIGIOUS OR SIMPLE FREEDOMS AND WILL NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES LET A SOCIALIST MARXIST LEANING PRESIDENT CONTINUE TO LET GOVERNMENT INTERVENE IN OUR LIVES.. This was the biggest mistake America has made in a long time but luckily it can be corrected as long as REAL AMERICANS wake up and correctly vote in NOVEMBER and get this community organizer in league with SOROS and Sinclair ouT OF OFFICE or our country will definitely be doomed for another four years
