Papa John's Employee Calls Woman 'Lady Chinky Eyes' on Receipt

Twitter

Papa John's has apologized after an employee typed a racial slur on a receipt to a customer Friday at one of its locations in New York City.

Minhee Cho posted an image of the receipt on Twitter, which called her "lady chinky eyes."

"Hey @ PapaJohns just FYI my name isn't 'lady chinky eyes,'" Cho tweeted.

The image went viral, and many tweeted complaints to Papa John's, such as "Your employees are your brand."

Papa John's replied to many complaints via Twitter, noting that the employee was being fired.

"We are very upset by recent receipt issue in New York & sincerely apologize to our customer. Franchise employee involved is being terminated," Papa John's tweeted.

This isn't the first time a restaurant has come under fire over employees using racial or ethnic slurs on receipts.

Last month, a cashier at a Chick-fil-A restaurant in Irvine, Calif., was fired after allegedly mocking Asian-American customers, ABC News Los Angeles station KABC-TV reported.

The cashier reportedly used "Ching" and "Chong" in the customer identification line on the receipts.

Photos of those receipts have also gone viral online.

In a written statement, a representative for the fast-food chain told KABC that "the individual clearly violated our operating standards."

"The matter was addressed and discussed immediately with the guests on the spot; and a confirmation was provided that the employee was immediately dismissed for the individual behavior," the statement said.

"The difference is "chink" is a racial slur. Whereas bald, white, and guy are all descriptive".

Yeah maybe so but what if it would have said "nasty fatso"? Sorry but imo, just as discriminating!!!!

Just goes to prove that you have to give your bloody name, or A bloody name, if you don't want to experience racism.
    Lady Chinky Eyes.
    Nice, for a teenager.
    Better than just plain "chink".

As someone who travels extensively (OTR for 7 months last year) I think this was an anomaly. I am constantly confronted with reasonably good service, with minimal exceptions.

It does help to be polite first. Service work is tough, and not incredibly rewarding without positive interaction from the customer.

Friends and I did do the "chew 'n screw at an Applebees in Longmeadow MA last week due to incredibly lousy kitchen service. Appetizers- 25 minutes for a salad and fried mozzarella, dinner was at 60 minutes when we left the 1/3 full restaurant. We did leave a tip, though, for the helpless waitress. I hope she was able to keep it.

For the price it is difficult to beat Papa Johns. There is better pizza in NYC but you pay dearly for it.

Smart restaurant employees use this to their advantage. Not long ago, I got a receipt that said "nice lady-red coat"--guess who got a nice tip!

That's the same thing I thought: What if he had put "Pretty Asian" on the receipt!
    • acitizen 4 months ago
so you would have no problem if the receipt said "fat lady in red coat" ?? just because YOUR receipt had a positive "name" doesn't make this story ok.

Oh gee what a shock...an immature fast food worker!!
You can have all the right policies and procedures in place but when your workforce is mostly adolescents, you'll have to expect the occasional idiotic and inappropriate antic among the millions of transactions handled... and for which Papa Johns seems to be addressing properly.

There's a number of people in this country that just don't get it. Whether you agree/disagree with people being oversensitive at different issues, you never, ever, ever, make your own call when it comes to customers. You play it safe or you get fired. End of story.

It's called the "dumbing" down of America. Not just in school but in manners and common sense. All these "kids" (even though they may be 30 years old and living at home with mom and dad) care about is their #$%$ cell phones, Facebook and their equally ignorant friends. I see nothing good in the country's future.
