Photographer Peeks Inside People’s Refrigerators

What does your fridge say about you? One San Antonio-based photographer decided to investigate by peeking inside people’s refrigerators in homes across America. In his photo series appropriately titled, “You Are What You Eat,” artist Mark Menjivar opens the doors to reveal fridges’ chilly contents: from a bartender who goes to bed at 8am and wakes at 4pm, to a short order cook who bench presses 300 pounds and has a dead snake in his freezer, to a food artist who runs a small vegan bakery from her apartment, and beyond. Inspired by a three-year trip he took traveling the country, Menjivar, 33, writes on his website he became intrigued with “the foods we consume and the effects they have on us as individuals and communities.” He captures the fridge’s contents “as is” with “nothing added, nothing taken away,” and hopes his artwork acts as “catalyst for dialogue about food issues.” Is your fridge ready for a photo op?
