She voted for obama. The train should have hit her because she is going to vote for him again.

First, this could've easily been a man or a teenager driving. I'm a locomotive engineer and I've seen a lot of stupid crap happen. That's why we have programs that go out into the community and teach people about railway crossing safety. It's called Operation Lifesaver. If you want to know just how bad it can be in situations like this, call your local railroad office and ask how to set up a class at your place of employment or childs school. And while I have your attention, here are a few things for you to know.
    1) If the lights are flashing and the bell is ringing but you can't see the train, never assume the train isn't almost there. Keep waiting. Your life isn't worth your hurry.
    2) Feel safe rather than annoyed because we blow the horns through your town late at night. We aren't trying to wake you up or be assholes. We are required to do so by federal law because of accidents like this one.
    3) Don't be annoyed when our headlights are on bright at night and we won't dim them for you even when we are aimed directly at you on the highway. This, too, is a federal mandate and we can get fired if we run on the main track without our lights on bright, day or night. My job isn't worth your comfort. Sorry. Also, don't be stupid enough to think flashing your lights at us or putting your high beams on us will make a difference. I guarantee you, the only one getting blinded is the poor guy coming at you on the highway.
Other than those tips, just remember, most trains can weight in excess of 15,000 tons. Multiply that by 2000 to get the weight in lbs. Even a light engine all by itself traveling at track speeds around 50 mph or better will enter your vehicle and go straight through leaving nothing of you to pick up worth showing mom and dad or your spouse and/or children if you find yourself in its way.
One more thing. All locomotives belonging to class 1 railroads are now equipped with digital recorders with a forward facing camera and external mics. No more can you survive a near miss collision, sue the railroad and come away a millionaire. In most cases, people who attempt this are now finding themselves in jail for various charges, but especially in this political climate it can include attempted sabotage and criminal trespass.
So, all that being said, please be safe and don't try to beat the train at a crossing. You will never win if you get tangled up with one and even if you do make it across, we have you on video and local law enforcement will be notified. We do have a near miss hotline we can call or have our dispatchers pass all the info along to a special part of the railroad designed to handle these kinds of things.
It's all in the name of public safety and awareness to try and save lives. But, in most cases like this, stopping the train in time to avoid hitting a vehicle just isn't going to happen. We might get it stopped a mile or so down the track. Our primary goal in these situations is doing our job correctly before, during and after. Thanks for reading and please do call your local railroad office and see about setting up an Operation Lifesaver class for your group, office or school. I know for a fact what you will learn will open your eyes and hopefully keep them that way for the rest of your lives.

You need on-board rocket launchers. Stupid people should be removed without prejudice or hesitation.

My captain denied my request to equip my ambulance with a "push bar" (police have them on their cars) because he said "YOU'D USE IT ON CABS...I KNOW YOU TOO WELL"

As a 37 year veteran of CSX (Conductor) I applaud your effort to educate and illuminate the public. It's a never ending effort and it must continue. Stay safe and good luck brother. Get your rest!

Ever feel like you're preaching to a wall? If you have to explain and draw pictures of WHY a train will always win, it's a loosing battle. People just don't understand weight and inertia, and why a train cannot stop in 200ft, or why a train cannot turn to avoid the accident. They think putting big airbags on the front of an engine is the way to go.

    "Stubborn driver"???

Sitting in your car on the tracks when you know a train is coming is not stubborn. It's suicidally stupid. This was nearly a hands-down Darwin Award winner, and possibly a Guinness record breaker. It just boggles the mind...

I think it is safe to say that when a train has gone up against any other type of vehicle, it is undefeated.

How do you get confused? The big flashing red lights and very loud train horn, not to mention the big white and black crossbar aren't enough indication the train is coming?

A few pointers from your friendly neighborhood locomotive engineer

    Let's start with some DON'Ts.

    1) A train is really, really big. Can we all accept that? Not even your Ram/F350/Hummer/douche-mobile is a match for a locomotive. You say you have a Cummins diesel? Caterpillar? Detroit? Oooooooh. Well I have an EMD 567 on a bad day, and even its pathetic eighteen-hundred horsepower will pound you and your gleaming pickup into the fourth dimension, so please, stay behind the white line!
    2) I hate blocking crossings. Seriously, I feel like a complete a-hole when I stop a train in the middle of the road and leave two dozen motorists to ponder their lattes and ask what the hell I'm doing. The truth is, sometimes it has to be done, so don't honk at me, flip me off, or scream at me from the window of your Dodge Caravan as you're shooting a U. Instead, be patient and try to believe that there's a point to what I'm doing. It's called switching, and my conductor is depending on me to work slowly and not run him over. If you don't believe me, Wiki it.
    3) Don't climb on the equipment. I hate to sound like your mother, but you're saving me a lot of paperwork and horrifying flashbacks by staying off the equipment. To you it might look like an abandoned train or a free ride, but when that pig starts to move with you on it, there's a good chance you won't be able to hold on. As long as you're on Wikipedia, punch in "slack action" and see what comes up. Also, the romance of riding freight trains is total B.S.. They're really dark, really cold, really windy, and hobos are freakin SCARY.
    4) Don't put stuff on the tracks. It's dangerous to me and my conductor, and it's ten times more dangerous for you and everyone else on the ground. If you're wondering "can a train go over a rock?" The answer is YES. There's only one problem. You probably haven't wondered where the million shards of rock are going to go at four times the speed of sound, have you?
    5) Stop whining about the horn. Countless accidents have been avoided because drivers missed the flashing lights but heard the horn. You'd have to blast Miley Cyrus and Lil' Bow Wow pretty freaking loud to drown out a five-chime, and often that's the only thing that saves people. Still, that's no reason to keep your stereo at eighty decibels as you're rolling through a crossing at sixty without looking both ways.
    6) By and large, railroad cops are major douche bags, so when you're trespassing on railroad property, keep your head out of your ass. These guys didn't make it into the real police force, and they will ream your butt inside and out to make up for it. Also, walking on bridges and in tunnels is extremely dangerous. Ask yourself: If a train comes, where will I go? Trains are much wider than the rails they run on, so don’t be fooled.

In Ohio, they've had to put a stop light in front of the railroad tracks because the intersection before it backs up and idiots will stop on the tracks...
