Getting Red-Carpet Ready

For the season’s ultimate red carpet event, Lara enlisted the help of Joe Zee, the creative director of ELLE magazine and star of "All on the Line With Joe Zee" on the Sundance channel.

“Lara has a very approachable, all-American style about her,” Zee said. “She's feminine and sexy and fun and youthful without ever crossing that line to … being too much. ... To me, she projects this chic, classy and tasteful persona, but incredibly modern.”

For the red carpet, Zee wants to see Lara in something on-trend, sophisticated and strong, but also feminine.

Lara told Zee she wanted to be pushed outside of her comfort zone. Her only requests: no strapless (since it doesn’t read as well on TV) and no spaghetti straps.

With Lara’s guidelines in mind, Zee set out to find a dress worthy of the Emmys.  From glittery gowns covered in sequins, to high-fashion one-shoulder dresses to show-stopping ball gowns, Zee searched through a sea of couture with his expert eye, and brought back the best of the best for Lara to try on.

Relying on the trusted advice of Zee and her family, Lara narrowed it down to these three final dresses. Now, it’s your turn to weigh in on Lara’s Emmy dress. Check out the looks below and cast your vote on the right-hand side for the one you want to see Lara wear on the big night.

1. Badgley Mischka’s Deep Purple, Jersey One-Shoulder Dress

Designer Badgley Mischka’s deep purple, one-shoulder dress with black jet-beading shoulder detail immediately caught Zee and Lara’s eye.

“Jersey is an incredibly sexy and versatile fabric that lends well to evening,” Zee said. “It can follow the lines of the body in a very flattering way and the ‘waist up’ details here will translate beautifully when Lara's hosting the pre-show.”

Zee would accessorize the dress with a pop of diamonds.  “I'd stay away from any neck pieces since it is one-shoulder, but a gorgeous diamond drop earring (with black interwoven) could be gorgeous here along with a diamond cuff on the opposite arm,” he said.

2. Zac Posen’s Nude, Satin and Tulle Ball Gown

The nude, satin and tulle ball gown from designer Zac Posen would be a showstopper on the red carpet. Zee calls it “the fairytale princess dress every girl dreams of.”

“This gown is total fashion fantasy for me. It's true couture with the intricate details, handiwork and train,” he said.

Since the dress alone makes a statement, Zee would keep the accessories simple. “I'd … go for simple diamond studs, a gorgeous diamond bracelet and a beautiful diamond ring.”

3. Monique Lhuillier’s Pewter Beaded Gown

Designer Monique Lhuillier’s pewter, beaded gown with the raw tulle edge is stylish choice that’s on-trend for this season, Zee explained.

“Metallics and shine is a huge trend that really translates in such a modern way on the red carpet,” Zee said. “The front seaming adds to the illusion of a longer silhouette.”

Accessories would be a metallic, strappy heel and a pair of drop diamond earrings.

“I love off-setting the sequins and the shine of the smoky color with clear diamonds. In this case a pair of gorgeous drop diamond earrings would dress up the look in an elegant, old-Hollywood type of way, especially with the addition of diamonds on the wrist and a great cocktail ring,” Zee said.
