Wisconsin Boy Saves Grandma's House From Foreclosure

The cost of renovations to a century-old home that has been in the family for three generations brought a Wisconsin woman perilously close to eviction, until her 12-year-old grandson stepped in.

"I wasn't even sure I was going to make it," Noah Lamaide said of his fundraising effort.

The budding philanthropist raised $10,500 in the course of a month, saving his grandmother's Stevens Point home from a scheduled auction date of Feb. 15.

Janice Sparhawk, 72, fell behind on mortgage payments in 2010 after taking out money to put a new roof on her home, a home with rich family history, partially built by her grandfather and the birthplace of her mother.

"My Grandma incase you don't know her has a heart of gold. She has given so much to our community since I can remember!!!" Noah posted Jan. 5, 2012, on his website, Noah's Dream Catcher Network.

Sparhawk, who has served as a foster parent to hundreds of Wisconsin children, also found herself unable to work after complications from eye surgery and severe asthma, making it even more difficult to make up what she owed.

"It means a lot to be here in my house" she said. "[Noah] is a special boy."

The boy signed a batch of checks Monday from donors living in his town to as far as California, over to the Portage County Bank.

Noah said he was just following the example set by his mother and grandmother.

"He's always putting others before himself, even as a little child," Noah's mother, Jill Sparhawk Lamaide, said. "I think he got it from seeing the foster kids come into my mom's home. A majority of them said I wish, 'I could be Noah.'"

Janice Sparhawk said the family has "never lived a life without somebody else in it," whether that meant serving as a foster family or doing charity work. The example rubbed off on Noah.

It started with a challenge Lamaide's mother made to her then 9-year-old son: do one community service project each year.

For most 9 year olds, forgoing birthday gifts for donations to a food bank would result in a tantrum. For Noah, however, it was just the right thing to do.

"In our home, I encourage teamwork. We're not just a family, we're a team," Jill Sparhawk Lamaide said.

With the help of his mother, Noah created the website to help raise money for the budding philanthropist's projects.

Noah fell short of his goal last year to send a family friend with cancer, her husband and daughter to Disneyland. The friend's mother died before the family could make the trip.

"He was a little discouraged by that," Lamaide said.

The girl left on the trip with her father two weeks ago. Lamaide has also organized a picnic for veterans.

The budding philanthropist said he has yet to identify his next project but promised to keep making a difference.

"It just makes me feel happy and like I did something to help the world," he said.

What a wonderful child. I hope some people take a lesson from this and teach their children the value of service to others. Way to go Noah, you are my new Hero!

This should be mandatory reading for all new parents (and some NOT so new parents). What a wonderful example to them on how easy it is to train up a child in the right way. To Noah I say, 'Blessed Be, Little One. Continue to grow up strong and of good heart.'

I got goosebumps reading this. The boy is not only a pride to his family but to the world. My own 15 year old is an A student and a model son to me...but this boy makes me wish I am part of his family too...my best wishes for the brightest future for him.

EXCELLENT JOB KID!!!! NICE WORK MOM AND GRANDMA!!!! You're raising an actual Human Being!!!
I think it would be a fine idea for anyone running for congress or senate, be required to spend two months living with no more than a base social security check, a bus pass, no health insurance and only a phone that will dial 911...Maybe that will give them a small taste of what it's like to need help...Actually, it wouldn't kill the higher-ups of a few large corporations to do that too! It would make a great TV show..."Reality 101".

and we need parents to raise kids to help others! judging from many of the comments on here.... don't hold your breath! i volunteer in the public schools and i see good kids every day. a whole lot of them have really hard home lives. what we learn starts at home from the earliest age.

Noah is an excellent role model for people of all ages and he is an authentic hero whose unselfish love and respect for his grandmother should make all of us very proud of him;kudos to his parents and to his grandmother for raising a fantastic young man! ;-))

Agreed........ but let's not forget that it was the generosity of unnamed OTHERS that GAVE their hard earned money to this stranger that says a LOT about them and THEIR parents..........Yes this young man asked/begged for help but the real heroes are the Americans that reached into their pockets and gave money.........not for their grandmother, not for a tax break, not to get on the news but because of the goodness in their hearts THOSE are the HEROES in this story.............This boy's mother and some of those former foster kids and those in that community should be ashamed that THEY let her get in this position, YES i said it..........All those adults that she helped couldn't have 1) found someone to fix her roof so she wouldn't have to take the loan in the first or 2) None of them could help before her grandson had to take to the internet to beg strangers?.... really...........I'm happy we have those of us that WILL help and don't need a parade or a ribbon for doing it but I'm saddened that those closer to her (not proximity, I mean people who personally knew her....who weren't 12) couldn't come up with MORE help when SHE needed it.

We really have nothing to fear in this country. We have kids that are growing up and ready to inherit problems, failures and issues that the over 40 generation struggle to solve. I tire of all politicians who have gloom and doom messages and do not see a bright future in kids who know early on how to make a difference. Clint Eastwood was being non political (another problem with over 40 year old persons.....too quick to judge.) and correct that we have ways in our American fabric to solve problems and if we bond together and respect each other we can move through our struggles...........and no, I am not smoking a blunt and seeing rainbows and stars........this is a non-jaded faith in the America that my parents and grandparents told me about.................keep up the good work kids.....you really do lead sometimes.......

This is one exceptional child. It is obvious what his family teaches him!!
I wish all kids in the next generation were this kind and caring about others! There is too much selfishness in the world.

I retired years ago from a 6 figure salary job. Now I volunteer teaching disabled sports for physically & mentally disabled. I get paid more now than when I was working---it's just not in money. I wish some of the rich & greedy people in this country could expierence what it's like. Check out how happy Warren Buffet & the Gates family are by helping others.

i have tears in my eyes. First, I am so happy people actually donated for this cause, I wish we could help all our neighbors. Second, this boy showed a maturity about the world that many 12 year olds lack (when I was 12, I doubt I even knew what a mortgage was). And third, because I'm getting older myself and it's so scary when you still owe money on a house and know your retirement probably won't pay for it. And rent costs as much as a mortgage, so there's no easy fix. The future is scary as we get older and frailer.

Smart kid. There are a lot of adults that could learn from his can-do attitude.

In case you didn't read the article, anonymous, she was a foster mother. You must not know much about the program, because the government doesn't give you a retirement program, let alone enough money to feed, cloth, and have extras for home repair. I am sure her social security isn't more than the normal, and that alone with taxes, insurance, water, electrical, gas, phone and so on takes her check to the last dollar. I live on 2 retirement checks a month, and with a house payment and the above bills, and all the medical expenses it is hard to cover my cost. I applaud her and give her GOD'S gold star. She and her family sound like they are a TEAM trying to make a difference. Keep up the great work

Thank you to all of the people who donated money to help his grandmother. Yes, he set it up and for that he deserves praise, but without the selfless giving of others the cause would've gone unfulfilled and his grandmother would've been evicted.

So refreshing - and encouraging - to read something so positive in the 'news'. Teaching selflessness and service by example in the family is altogether too rare in today's world, and I'm happy to know someone is still passing those values on to their children. This young man has already experienced both sides of the coin - both success and not achieving his goals - healthy lessons in dealing skillfully with the realities of life. Kudos and best wishes to this young man and his family!
