AGE — 81; born Aug. 30, 1930.

EDUCATION — Graduated from University of Nebraska in 1950. Applied to Harvard University's graduate business school but was rejected. Earned master of economics degree from Columbia Business College in New York in 1951.

FAMILY — First wife, Susan Thompson, married in 1952 and separated in 1978, died in 2004 at age 72. Three children: Susan, who lives in Omaha; Howard, a farmer outside Decatur, Ill., who also is a member of the Berkshire board of directors; and Peter, a composer and musician living in New York. Buffett married his longtime companion, Astrid Menks, in a private ceremony on his birthday in 2006.

OCCUPATION — Multibillionaire investor as chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway Inc. of Omaha. Gathered $105,000 from four relatives and three close friends to start Buffett Partnership in 1956. Berkshire's stock price now tops $120,000 per share.
