John McAfee, the tech titan wanted in connection with a murder in Belize, has apparently started a blog while in hiding in the tiny Central American country.
The 67-year-old millionaire has been on the run from police in San Pedro, Belize, after he was named a person of interest in the shooting death of his neighbor, Gregory Faull, whose body was discovered last Sunday morning.
"I am a very nice guy and certainly innocent of the charges leveled against me," McAfee told ABC News by phone on Wednesday.
Chad Essley, a friend of McAfee, said the blog, entitled "Hinterland," is authentic. A man claiming to be John McAfee confirmed in an email to ABC News the words are his.
In an entry posted today on the blog, McAfee discusses people close to him who have allegedly been arrested since he went into hiding.
"After the murder of Mr. Faul [sic], the police began a systematic roundup of my friends and associates," McAfee wrote.
Among those arrested were his housekeeper, bodyguard, the bodyguard's wife, a taxi driver, and McAfee's best friend in Belize, according to the blog post.
Despite having been in hiding for a week, McAfee has remained calm, given the circumstances, Essley said.
"He's got a lot of time to think and write and sort, and has been using the time to update his blog with some of the concerns about the Belizean government," Essley told ABC News.
Belize's prime minister, Dean Barrow, has urged McAfee to come forward and aid police in the investigation.
"It strikes me that he is extremely paranoid," Barrow said. "I would go as far as saying he is completely bonkers."
