McDonald's and Chipotle Add Menu Items

Fast food menus around the country are getting an update and it's not all burgers and fries. Starting next month, McDonald's restaurants will add Fish McBites and Chipotle restaurants will be testing out tofu "sofritas."

For a limited time, McDonald's locations will serve "crispy, tender pieces of flaky Alaska Pollock," which look like a fish version of Chicken McNuggets. The Fish McBites will come in three sizes: snack, regular and shareable. The McBites can also be substituted as an entree in a Happy Meal.

McDonald's is also pledging to serve MSC-Certified sustainable fish at all locations in the United States.

For the vegetarian crowd, Chipotle will begin testing their new tofu option, Sofritas, in seven locations in San Francisco starting in February.

The Sofritas are made with "premium organic tofu from Hodo Soy in Oakland, that we braise with chipotle peppers, poblanos and a blend of aromatic spices," said Chris Arnold, communications director for Chipotle in an email.

The new item offers a new meal option for the vegetarian and vegan communities.

"There is no correlation between the Sofritas test and meat prices. We have tested a similar item (we called it Garden Blend) but discontinued that test because we weren't thrilled with it. The idea here is simply to offer another option to vegetarian customers (we are very popular in the vegetarian and vegan communities) and that will have some crossover appeal as well," said Arnold.
