Runaway Truck Full of Sand Flattens Car

A semi-trailer carrying nearly 45 tons of sand burst through a retaining wall and smashed a car before landing partially in a family's home Thursday morning in Bountiful, Utah.

The truck was hauling sand to Bountiful Ridge Golf Course around 6:45 a.m. when the driver down shifted and was not able to get the truck into gear. The emergency brakes then failed to activate, causing the truck, and its load of sand, to roll backwards down the road.

The truck hit a power pole and caused a transformer to blow before rolling into the home of the Bymaster family, who were eating breakfast in another part of their home, according to local ABC affiliate KTVX.

"My wife thought something fell from the sky," Bill Bymaster told KTVX.

While Bymaster and his family escaped injury, a red Mazda sitting in their driveway was not as fortunate. The car, which was waiting to be picked up by its buyer, was flattened by the truck.

"We sold that yesterday," Bymaster said of the car, which had been sold to a University of Utah student.

The driver of the semi truck, who was not identified, also escaped injury.

Authorities said he had proper citations to carry the heavy load on the road and did not expect he would be charged.

"It looks like a gross mechanical failure," said Bountiful police Sgt. Andrew Bryson, according to The Associated Press.
