Disney Partners With First Book for New Charity

The Walt Disney Co. has launched a public initiative to champion children's literacy and help provide books and other resources to children in need.

The campaign started on Saturday and will run through next month. It will feature public service announcements on "Good Morning America," "Katie," "The View" as well as other programs and stations owned by ABC.

ABC News is owned by The Walt Disney Co.

Communities all across the country can get involved and become recipients of the 200,000 books that will be made available through First Book, a nonprofit that works to ensure children from low-income families have access to new books.

Individuals may also participate by nominating organizations or schools in their area to be recipients of book donations.

According to its website, First Book has distributed more than 100 million books and educational resources to programs and schools serving children from low-income families throughout the United States and Canada.

In 2011, Disney donated eight million books to First Book.
