Online gun threat at the University of Chicago

A University of Illinois at Chicago student has been arrested in connection with an online threat of gun violence at the University of Chicago on Monday that did not materialize, UIC officials said.

“We are monitoring this situation closely and are concerned about the impact this has had on our campus and the University of Chicago,” UIC Chancellor Michael Amiridis said in a statement that only identified the student as living off the UIC campus. UIC officials declined to release additional information.

UIC said campus police had increased patrols at the school, even though no threats were made against its students, faculty or staff.

FBI officials would only say an individual was in custody in connection with the threat of violence at the University of Chicago. They said charges are pending and no further information was available.

On Sunday afternoon, the university canceled Monday classes and activities after being warned by the Federal Bureau of Investigation that someone had made an online threat of gun violence on campus.

The university said in a statement on Monday that there is increased security on campus. (Reuters)
